The frugal girl’s guide to fashion May 15, 2008
Dear ones, I have, until now, strayed away from divulging my preferences for attire. It is not because I did not trust you with my ‘trade secrets’, for you have a sweet and trustworthy face. No, it was because I did not know you so well and feared you may think my choice of fashion retailers poor. But now that I see your kind nature better, it is clear to me that you will forgive what others would deem a fashion faux pas.
You see dearly beloveds, while anyone would attest to me being an admirer of à la mode, I will not walk into a store without first identifying a ‘sale’ sign within. Except, that is, in the case of recycle boutiques where ‘full-price’ is reasonable even for me!
Being a fan of The Recycle Boutique in Auckland, I was well pleased when it opened here in Wellington too. Although we already have Ziggurat, a fine establishment indeed, it does stray to the ‘pricey’ side a little often.
I have found Cue pants (~$30), Voon pants (~$40), retro NZ-made wedge heeled Fabia shoes (~$10), Seduce pants (~$20) – I really do wear a lot of pants! (or ‘trousers’ in the British vernacular). All of which I love. I also get a real kick out coming home with great gear at bargain prices…don’t we all…
I have also sold my own clothing at both Ziggurat and The Recycle Boutique, which helps subsidise subsequent purchases.
So now that I have shared my secret shame (actually I’m not shamed, I just like alliteration), tell me lovelies – where do you get your bargains?
that bargain bin in ziggarat has given me some winners like you wouldn’t believe! denim workshop frock-coat for twelve dollars! world sheer silk black ruffle front blouse - six dollars! huzzah! too many exclamation points!!!
Also the bargain bins at frutti have some goodies from time to time and I have been known to pop over to the op shops in masterton (esp. Mingle Mart - fill a bag for five dollars) to stock up on vintage woolen skirts and all manner of pretty shoes and bags and the occasional hat.
ohhhhhh
…..If there is something that I love love love it is op shopping…
But I have had my best adventures exploring outside the city. Savemart is my favourite….out of the city, and bigger than an Auckland warehouse, you just need a bit of time to wade through all the rubbish….and not be afraid to revisit the 80’s mwahaha….
In Wellington it is just out in porirua….
Ohh thanks a bundle I am in Wellington next weekend and will have to check out this Ziggurat and Savemart too.
As a Chcher and bargain-snifferoutterer I like Dressmart - the Max out there has lots of $10 goodies, last time I was there got a lovely brown lace overtop for $9. Plus Andrea Biani’s outlet shoes get reduced a lot - I’ve had scores galore there. Tasman Traders is a good opshop and most things are $4.
[…] There’s plenty of places to buy cheap clothes […]
There is also another place opened up in right at the end of left bank arcade in Wellington called “The paper bag princess” which has very very cheap second hand labels as well as vintagy type clothing.I got a gorgeous CUE skirt for $12!!
