Oh make me over June 23, 2008

Filed under: Amy, Girlie Party, Joanna, MakeMonday, Rachel, make-up — johubris @ 8:58 pm

A while ago at Make Up/Over Monday, we decided that we’d set ourselves the challenge of looking different. What this translated to was that Rachel who normally doesn’t wear much makeup at all got the full on loads of bright eyeshadow ala me, and since I normally do my makeup very loose and smudgey, Amy applied mine neat and straight out of Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin, in the style of “Temptress”, modeled on Barbara Streisand. It was a learning experience for everyone involved!

The results and revelations after the jump.

Victoria’s Secret online sale June 21, 2008

Filed under: Amy, clothes — Amy @ 5:44 pm

Victoria’s Secret is the staple support for American women and, in this new-fangled information age, us Kiwi lasses can also get a boost from their sumptuous supplies of bras, panties (in the American lexicon), and even beauty products.

I’ve heard great things about VS’s instore service. Like apparently they have all their styles in all the sizes at hand near the changing rooms in white, so you can easily try on all the styles you could possibly want. Then having got the fit right, you can go out to the racks and decide on colours and so on. Also, their website has some good tips on adjusting bras for the perfect fit.

And they also sell heaps of other products - shoes, beauty and makeup, clothing.

And right now they have a sale online, and they ship internationally. BUT it costs a bit for shipping so hopefully the sale prices will balance the shipping cost. The all you have to worry about is the carbon credits in return for those boosted bazooms.

How to: Pretty Pouf June 20, 2008

Filed under: Amy, hair — Amy @ 8:08 pm

Here’s a vid I made on how to make pouf with a pony tail. It’s easy peasy - you just need a tail comb, hair spray and bobby pins. Oh and medium to long hair.

However, I mucked up the pony tail in the video - it could’ve been higher and the pouf flatter. But I’m sure you get gist and do a much better job than I did. (and I also say ‘pouf’ really funny, hehehe).

Mascara = liquid liner June 18, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 7:49 pm

When I was a young teen (they didn’t have tweens in those days) I had this great pen-like liquid eyeliner with a fine tip. But it ran out pretty fast, and not wanting to spend my hard-earned paper-run money on expensive cosmetics, I made do with mascara. Alls I did was dip the tip of my old brush into the globby stuff at the end of my mascara wand, and voila! instant liquid eyeliner - the exact same colour as my mascara even.

I forgot that I used to do this until recently. And I tried it out again to see if I still had the knack.

I used the finest brush I have (from the art shop) and applied through the base of my upper lashes (like this). Was pretty easy and super cheap.

Beauty tips from a pretty lady

Filed under: Amy, skin care — Amy @ 1:25 pm

I love these tips - thanks for the beauty round-up Megan!! (hope you don’t mind me linking to ya!) And you have some smart friends. I’ll have to check out this elizabeth arden 8 hour cream…

And while we’re sharing - I don’t actually cleanse, scrub or tone my skin either. I’ve got a foaming face wash in the shower and other than that it’s just moisturiser. Not that my skin’s great, but i don’t notice the difference from when i used to cleanse, scrub and tone.

But I do use a warm wet flannel (facecloth) on my face every day - that’s the best exfoliant I reckon.  The heat opens the pores and water is the best solvent. Just go easy on the eye area.

Sale: makeup at Farmers June 17, 2008

I just picked up these beautiful eye colours at the Farmers sale. Most of the cosmetic counters have a range of red-dot sale items. Napoleon Perdis had a bunch of products 30% off. So these little babies were $26 less 30% which is… umm… like… $18 (phew - that just made my maths degree worth it).

The pretties met last week to compare blusher, drink wine by the fire, and watch Bonnie and Clyde. We decided that the Revlon sale, in pharmacies now, had some great bargains on blusher. The Body Shop had the best quality-for-price blusher brush. Oh so soft. Faye Dunaway as Bonnie was exceptionally beautiful and did a great line in fake eyelashes, and lovely clothes in gold, cream and grey marle. The plot was a bit predicatable though - they cross the country, robbing banks and shooting people, and that’s about it.

My free BareEscentuals make-over June 15, 2008

I has gots ma free make-over today! And unlike every other make-over I’ve had by a cosmetics lady (I’m looking at you Clinique lady!), I didn’t end up looking like a clown.
In fact I really liked how I ended up looking, and even bought a product from the lady.

But rewinding a little first, here’s how the make-over panned out:
Mineral foundation - powder stuff, must be applied with brush and buffed into skin. Surprisingly good coverage of red broken veins and dark circles.
Mineral bronzer - real natural looking - so impressive I bought some.will review more later.
Mineral eye shadow - I tried the ‘Joy’ and ’sex kitten’ - lovely strong brown and gold colours. Needs careful application as the powder has to be packed onto lids with brush than blended out.
Mascara - just mascara really.
Lip gloss - just lip gloss really.

This range is a bit different in terms of application since it’s all mineral powder based. so you have to have good brushes for each product. and boy is it expensive.
BUT they say the powders ae actually improve your skin too, and the finish and colours are superb.

Personally, I’m not likely to buy the foundation, just ’cause it’s $75, but i did buy the bronzer and if i win lotto i’ll go back for the eyeshadows.

This is an excellent freebie though, and the lady was nice and knew a lot about the products.
and I went out on the town after my make-over feeling a million (dollars that is).
Oh and there was no obligation to buy.

The free make-overs are available each friday this month at Nature Unplugged.

Here’s a little video review of it too.
