and change your mascara and eyeliner every 6 months
your eyes will thank you for not meeting icky bacteria that can cause infections
eye infection do not equal pretty pretty pretty
the best thing i ever did for my face was stopping using cleaners and other various face washes, exfoliants etc and just using a really mild soap like dove or something like that. Cleared my pimply skin up like nothing else, its so much cheaper and best of all my skins been great ever since!
For dry hair, I have a gigantic jar of coconut oil, which go pretty cheap at Asian supermarkets or organic stores. Just a fingernail-full covers all the brittle ends, and left in overnight sinks in and leaves my hair feeling awesomely soft.
Sue: I never change my mascara, until it dries up or I lose it,and I still have some eyeshadow my mother bought in the ’80s. Have you (or anyone else) ever actually got an infected eye from old product? Cos it’s one beauty “rule” that I think was invented to sell more product. (and if you have, I apologise, perhaps my body is so busy with all my other crap that it doesn’t have time to get eye sensitive)
to be honest i have ancient mascara i still use and never have any problems with it… i’m too cheap to re-buy after x amount of months when its not even used up!
I’m the same Jo… I think it’s a load of crap. I didn’t have any eye shadow in the 80s, but I still use the black eyeshadow I bought for the 7th form formal. So that’s 10 years old and my eyes are fine.
hmmm, tips.. tips.. never let a stoned person give you a french manicure. it looks awesome to them at the time but it’s not til the next day when people are laughing that you realise…
Before curling your lashes zap your curler with your blow dryer… Keep an old mascara brush clean and dry does a way better job then a normal lash brush!
Vaseline is a life saver! Carry it with you to save dry hands (especially if you have dry sensitive skin like me), dry patches on your face, to smooth fly away hair and of course as a lip balm. You only need a tiny bit each time
Use it around your hairline before doing a home dye job so you don’t have to scrub the colour off later when it drips down your forehead.
Always carry a tube of Lucas’ Pawpaw Ointment in your handbag. It’s great on chapped lips, it works wonders on dry citicles, you can use it on itchy bites, scratches, cuts, and burns. It’s pretty much an all-in-oner, but it gets the most use from me as a lip balm.
You can get it at most chemists these days.
o.k., I am a bit hopeless when it comes to beauty tips, but this is something that really saved me. If you have problems with really dry, sore, or cracked lips, throw away that Chap Stick (which really has addictive qualities!) and buy a tube of Am-o-Lin baby cream. It is a bit embarrassing if someone sees it, but it is the most soothing thing ever, and really heals your lips….and you stop being reliant on a little tube!!
Use Cetaphil as a face wash and make-up remover in the evening. It’s relatively cheap, and does a great job of cleansing your skin without stripping and drying it. They make an oily skin formulation as well, which is really good if you find that the regular kind is leaving your skin a bit oily. The great thing about it is that if you are like me, and are lazy about washing your face at night, it makes everything so much easier. You don’t even need to wet your face first – just massage it into your skin then rinse clean.
“Have you (or anyone else) ever actually got an infected eye from old product?”
Yes
my friend had to wear an eye patch for 2 weeks and was on aintibiotics and then all sorts of drops for a month or so, and it was gross.
here is the thing, like testing hair dye before you use it, most people don’t but when your hair falls our or your scalp comes out in a hive, you wish you’d done some testing. changing mascara and any other eye product is like that.
it’s all about being safe rather than sorry, and in this case really sorry.

Just to put my two cents in, I know someone who got an eye infection from really old mascara and wasn’t nice! Scared the crap out of me and now I’m super vigilant about replacing them every 6 months or so.
Thanks so much to Liz for her comment about Dove soap instead of yucky cleansers! I switched and my skin feels so much better….
Yeah, I have had eye infection issues, and was advised by my doc to throw out my mascara. I’, glad I did, because a recurrence of them would have sucked.
And my best tip is: Buy the best foundation you can afford, and always take it off before bed.
