Announcing the winners of the Herbatint prize

October 16th, 2008

Thanks to all those who entered the prize draw and shared their stories. Five lucky people were chosen randomly (which was somewhat easier for the shades of blonde with only a single entrant).

I hope you like your prize:

Lisa (dark chestnut)

Caroline (dark blonde)

Ginny (blonde)

Samantha (blonde)

Jenn (light golden blonde)

Winners (that’s right, you are now officially winners), I’ll email you shortly and ask for your mailing address so I can mail out your prize to you. If you don’t hear from me you can always email me: amy(at)prettyprettypretty(dot)com

And if you’ve got any comments about Herbatint after you’ve used it, please send them to PPP. I think it’s great and easy to use, so I’m interested to hear what you think.

Get buffed

October 15th, 2008

My dear friend Sarah gave my this awesome gift that buffs and shines nails in two easy steps. Use one side of the buffer pad to file down ridges, and then use the other side to shine shine shine. It works really well! It feels like having a layer of polish on. And you can see from this photo the shine on my buffed index finger (even though I have a terrible camera for detail).

So now when I’m at work, waiting for my PC to think, I can buff the time away.

In the news: alopecia is so hot right now

October 14th, 2008

(Jo, I wrote this a couple of days ago, but might be a timely follow-up to your ‘hairy fem’ post)

I was watching a doco the other day, about body hair and women. It followed several women who stopped plucking, waxing, shaving, and chemically burning their body hair. One daft woman said she couldn’t stand her newly grown body hair because it felt “so unnatural”.

And on another day, I went to a new hairdresser who, I noticed, had a bit of under-arm hair. I instantly took a liking to her. I assume it’s quite rare to find a hairy beauty professional.

I’m all for body hair, AND for the freedom to change or get rid of it. All I hate is the increasing pressure to be completely body-hairless all the time.

So my sincere praise to women who let their body-hair flow free.

And now for the aforementioned news from Stuff.co.nz. It’s a pretty interesting read:
Scarred in the quest for beauty

I am a hairy feminist and that’s okay

October 14th, 2008

When I went to Samoa, I was going to write a post about how much fun it was to depilitate my thighs, how satisfying it was to see the huge big clumps of hair washing down the drain, and how great it was that the three-minute-shower-cream that I was using didn’t make my legs smell like roast chicken the way creams in 1996 used to. But I didn’t get around to it, and now there’s no way I’m going to. The reason? Veet Wax’s TV ads that say that waxing makes you more feminine. I’m sorry, but what? WHAT? Get stuffed, how dare you tell me what’s feminine and what’s not? And their slogan “what beauty feels like” – oh silly me, there I was thinking that beauty had to do with feeling good, rather than worrying that you’re not hairless enough to wear what you feel like wearing.

I’m not going to stop shaving my legs (to the knee), but I’m not going to apologise for the parts of me that are hairy either. If you enjoy waxing your legs, by all means, keep waxing your legs (I went through a stage of waxing my toes purely because the pain made me feel), but please, don’t ever think that it’s okay for advertising to play on women’s insecurities about not being feminine enough.

Calling all blondes!

October 14th, 2008

We haven’t had many blondes enter our prize draw for Herbatint hair dye. It closes tomorrow, and it’d be a real shame if noone got to win the blonde packs. So blondes, click here to enter.

Team Pretty’s Hollie, Queen of the Divas

October 13th, 2008

Holly in the ringI might be all lady-like sometimes, but there’s one time when I most definitely am not – when I’m at Kiwi Pro Wrestling, as you can hear in my screaming if you watch this video of my former flatmate Lazarus Volt fighting. Going to the wrestling is an awesome experience, which is why I must urge all of you in Wellington to come along to the Halloween Howl II on October 31. We’ll be dressing up as zombies for the zombie walk later that night and you’re welcome to sit with us.

In honour of Halloween Howl II, and also because of the awesomeness of her name, and the brilliance of her performances in the ring, we asked Hollie, Queen of the Divas from Team Pretty the hard questions.

1. How did you get into wrestling in the first place?
I ran into Jonnie Juice one night at a VIP wrestling event. We clicked instantly – being so much better looking than everyone else in the room had alienated us from the rest of the party. We bonded over that, and decided to capitalise on our collective awesomeness, so he invited me to join Team Pretty and the greatest stable in New Zealand wrestling today was born.

2. Do you have any difficulties being a female wrestler in such a macho sport?
Hollie DivaNo, no, no…the boys know their place. In fact, I have no trouble with them what so ever. Although, that ghastly Charlie Roberts is a continual nuisance, the refs are completely incompetent, and don’t get me started on management…

3. How do you balance your in-ring persona and the real you or are they the same thing?
Why would I want to be anything other than Hollie Pretty “Queen of the Divas”? I’m incredible. so yes, they are the same thing. It takes a lot of time and effort to be this amazing – for normal people. I’m lucky enough to naturally be this fabulous.

4. What do you wear/do to make yourself feel good?
I have more bling than old Lizzy over in England. So I’m never short of a material confidence boost. I also love to watch my “Loser Leaves Town Match” where I sent Jess, the loser, packing from KPW. I was brilliant, and I looked good too.

5. How would you define pretty?
Jonnie and Hollie. Enough said.

Review: A’kin shampoo

October 13th, 2008

I was given a free sample of A‘kin shampoo – for sensitive scalps and babies. It’s made in Australia by The Purist Company, who say their product is extremely gentle, pH balanced, hypoallergenic, paraben and sulphate free, and not fragranced.

It’s a good shampoo – cleans well, leaves hair soft a shiny (and I didn’t even use it with a conditioner).

But the most exciting thing is the lack of fragrance. I can’t remember ever using a shampoo without fragrance. Turns out, the smell of my own hair is nice. It doesn’t smell of anything, but it’s nice!

BTW you can buy this range online, or at Green Living, 115 Jackson St, Petone. It costs about AUS$13 for 5oomls.
