Free mascara with Marie Claire

January 29th, 2009

Australian Marie Claire has a free mascara with February’s issue. And it just so happens to be a mascara we’ve favourably reviewed here on PPP. Virtuose is a good little Lancome mascara, especially free!

And Marie Claie is usually a pretty decent read.

MAC lash & dash

January 29th, 2009

MAC’s Lash & Dash lashes look superb with some super newbies added to the collection. Apparently, you can get your MAC lashes fitted at a MAC counter free anytime you need to, so they’re a great investment even if you have trouble applying them yourself.

Mary Kay par-tay!

January 28th, 2009

I had a genuinely awesome time at the Mary Kay party at my place last night. Hope my other guests were as enthused. Karyl Anderson is the most expert make-up and skincare person you can talk to. I learned so much and picked up some great products that I got to thoroughly try and test before purchasing. Plus I got a free Satin Hands gift for being host!

I picked up so many tips from Karyl, and me and Jo gonna share them all over a number of posts.

Here’s the first few tips about buying foundation:

  • Test foundations by striping possible matches down your jaw-line. The best match is likely to be the one that ‘disappears’ into your skin when you squint at yourself.
  • Leave tester foundation on your skin for several minutes before deciding on the best colour. Everyone’s skin has its own acid-mantel (or something) that will affect the colour of foundation. So leave it a while to settle.

Thanks Karyl!!

Unstinking you

January 26th, 2009

Congratulations to Kebabette and Morgan who, thanks to the random number generator, both won their choice of Linden Leaves room-sprays. If you guys would like to send me an email (joanna @ prettyprettypretty . com), I’ll get those prizes out to you soon. And for the rest of our readers who have to deal with stinky things in life, this might help – a picture of racoons making out.

In the news: $175million worth of free cosmetics

January 22nd, 2009

US consumers are heading in droves to cosmetics counters to pick up free stuff!

This from The Consumerist:

In the US, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Filene’s, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue have all settled a class action by agreeing to give away $175 million worth of cosmetics starting January 2009. No proof of purchase is necessary, but the freebies will be handed out on a first-come-first-served circus basis.

You see, these sneaky companies had been conspiring to sell at RRP only – never at a discount, and also coordinating promotions so they wouldn’t be in competition.

I wonder what the story is here in New Zealand? You’d think it would be super easy to conspire here, with fewer competitors. I couldn’t find anything on the commerce commision website or around though.

Asking for it…

January 21st, 2009

It never hurts to ask!

This from the NZ Herald:

The recession combined with the looming end of the latest season means you’d be a fool to pay full price for fashion – especially with many fashion houses putting up signs screaming sale, sale, sale!

The Herald on Sunday went undercover to see what bargains could be bagged at frock shops along trendy Nuffield St in Auckland’s Newmarket on Thursday. The first thing to catch our eye was a fitted, blood-red velvet jacket with a gold trim in Karen Walker. Originally $691 and on sale at $325, the assistant quickly agreed to let us take it home for $280. Asked if she would further discount any other gorgeous gems, she confidently and breezily said yes (and without looking offended) but said it would depend on the item or how many were purchased.

A sales assistant at Alannah Hill, across the road, didn’t flinch at a request to further reduce a sexy black silk knee-high cocktail dress with generous gathering and tucks.

I can’t remember the last time I haggled down a clothing shop assistant, but I asked for and got a free ironing board with my new vaccuum cleaner, and a free mini-size mascara from Estee Lauder just the other day. And my boyfriend haggled down the lads at the Little Brother closing down sale.

Smells as good as gold

January 16th, 2009

Apparently, ancient civilizations attributed healing properties to pure gold, which was often included in cosmetic preparations. I’m not sure how true that is, but I do know that Linden Leaves is all up with their gold goodness, and when I wore it out on New Year’s Eve, I didn’t feel nearly as bad the next day as I should have!

Because Amy and I are lucky and spoilt, we were sent GOLD gel, GOLD lotion and also GOLD mist, as well as some lovely creamy gold eye shadow which I haven’t seen for sale anywhere. As I was planning my New Year’s Eve outfit to have all kinds of metallic accents anyway, it was the perfect time to try out the products.  They all have a similar soft scent that matches their ingredients – extracts of avocado and chamomile with a hint of vanilla. After my shower, my skin was a little sparklier than usual, and once I had slathered myself all over with the lotion, I was sheeny and glittery and lovely – without looking like a raver from the ’90s, which is always a bonus. It’s probably the shiniest body shimmer I have ever used, but it does seem more subtle than other products at the same time, if that makes sense? Yes? Good.

Normally, we like to give away the products that we get to try, but I’m going to hold on to the gel and the lotion, hah! But! Instead, we’ve got some Linden Leaves Room sprays to give away. There’s a Green Tea & Lime, and Passionfruit & Echinaecia and both retail for $27.50 (have we mentioned that there’s free shipping on Linden Leaves NZ website?). If you want to win one, leave us a comment and tell us what stinks in your life right now, and which fragrance you’d prefer. We’ll draw them at random, and then throw in the GOLD mist for the answer we prefer. The competition’s open only to addresses in NZ, and we’re closing it next Friday. Yay for winning stuff!

Kiwi Body Art Extraordinaire

January 9th, 2009

This aritcle is from Stuff, about Joanne Gair – body art extraordinaire. I like how Joanne Gair describes her vocation as ‘illusionist’. Make-up is such an artistic medium, I love artists doing creative stuff with it.

Gair, 50, who now lives in New York, is originally from Takapuna and is the daughter of former cabinet minister George Gair. She calls herself an “illusionist and image maker”.
