Make your own Cold Cream

February 28th, 2009

Have you guys read the latest issue of World Sweet World – the alt-indy, diy/miy mag made right here in Wellington?

There’s a recipe by Rachel Fabish for cold cream. Cold cream is the ultimate cleanser and moisturiser in one. It’s easy to make yourself and very cheap.

Here’s the gist of it, but if you want more detail you should check out World Sweet World.

Get 6 tablespoons of olive oil and 28g beeswax, put it in a jar and stand in a pan of hot water until wax is just melted.

Warm 2 tablespoons of rosewater and add slowly to wax, stirring the whole time.

Remove jar from hot water. Stir until cool and thick.

Store in clean, tightly sealed, dark jar.

Easy peasy!

Olive what she’s having

February 27th, 2009

For our three-month anniversary party, the lovely Miss Kowhai brought along some Olive Hydrating Face Mist and to be honest, I really didn’t get it. If you want to moisturise your face, why wouldn’t you just put on moisturiser? But it turns out my problem was with the concept, and not with the brand, because the lovely Mrs. Kat just sent me some Olive Lip Balm with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Shea Butter, and I totally adore it! It smells divine, goes on from its tube really smoothly, and makes my lips feel lovely and soft. It is the kind of lip balm that you can feel when you’re wearing it, so your mileage may vary if you prefer your products to not be noticeable, if you know what I mean. The directions for use do say that for best results you should apply it often, but I think it lasts pretty well – like a good hour between applications, maybe? And for a slick lip product, that’s not that bad. Plus, I really like this quote from their homepage:

To our family, olive oil isn’t simply a matter of food or health, but a way of life. Our products are our heart and soul, packaged up for you to enjoy.

Now I really want a martini with extra olives (an Olive Salad, even), and perhaps these fantastic Dorothy Parker martini glasses from Bust Magazine to go with them:

“I do like to have a  martini
One or two at most
Three and I’m under the table
Four and I’m under the host”

It’s Friday! Oi live for Fridays! Okay, no more puns, but do have yourself some fun okay?

Yeah, but what’s Claudia wearing?

February 25th, 2009

Now, I dunno about you guys, but I grew up reading the Babysitters’ Club books – every time my mum went to the supermarket, I’d go into the bookshop, sit on the ground and work my way through them. I could never decide who my favourite one was – I liked the way that Kirsty got things done that Dawn was chilled out, but I longed to be able to dress like Claudia Kishi, and it seems I’m not the only one. In honour of an awesome blog I’ve stumbled across (and stolen this dance picture from) called What Claudia Wore, I gotta know: who’s the best dressed?

Who is the best-dressed member of the Babysitter's Club?

  • Stacey had gone for almost total black [like her soul?]: black jeans, black boots, black turtleneck, silver cropped top over that, black boots with silver side buttons and silver X earrings." (48%, 10 Votes)
  • "Dawn was wearing this cool oversized (really oversized) blue shirt. One of the coolest things about it was that it was green inside, so that when she turned the collar down and rolled the sleeves up (24%, 5 Votes)
  • Claudia " She was wearing a wonderful Claudia outfit - a purple-and-white striped body suit under a gray jumper-thing. The legs of the body suit stretched all the way to her ankles, but she was weari (19%, 4 Votes)
  • "Kristy was wearing a white turtleneck with little red and blue hearts all over it, a red sweater, jeans, and sneakers." (5%, 1 Votes)
  • "Mary Anne was wearing a short plum-colored skirt over a plum-and-white-striped body suit. The legs of the body suit stopped just above her ankles, and she'd tucked the bottoms into her socks. I don (4%, 1 Votes)

Enough about us, let’s talk about you

February 25th, 2009

Hi! We are still alive, and we are still using many lovely products. We’ve just both been insanely busy though. Updates as normal will follow shortly, but until then, two things:

  1.  We’re going to be having a BIG one year anniversary party in March or April (date to be confirmed) and as part of that there’ll be another clothing swap, so please start saving clothes to trade.
  2.  I love the cover for the new LOVE magazine so much:
  3. What’s a new product or regime you’ve tried lately? Details please!

Evolve with Wanda!

February 19th, 2009

Hey, remember our Pretty Pretty Martha from Wanda Harland? She’s got a great deal going on.

The lovely folks at Evolu have arranged for us to do some 2 for 1 deals on their gorgeous Invigorating Body Lotion and Invigorating Hand and Cuticle Cream.

These New Zealand made products are incredibly tasty smelling and will make you feel a million bucks, for only $24.

They don’t mention it, but the first time I tried Evolu was stealing the products that my dad got from flying Air NZ Business Class, so you know, if you wanna smell like you’ve just joined the Mile High Club, or just, you know, want to feel good, then get your ass out to Petone. There’s lots of fun stores out there, and the French Toast at Go Bang is amazing. Woo!

Quick review: Elements Body Lotion

February 12th, 2009

You know, it would take a pretty harsh person to criticise a product that’s made directly to fund the Cancer Society (as opposed to the “oh, we’ll donate half a cent from every bottle” type promotion), but as it turns out, I am that person.

What is life without a little luxury?

We all deserve some pampering and if we can help others at the same time, it feels even better. That’s the philosophy behind the Cancer Society’s new range of skincare.

Made from gentle ingredients and infused with natural extracts to soften and beautify, elements is the skin care range that really cares. Treat yourself to elements and know that your purchase is contributing funds to the valuable work of the Cancer Society.

Okay, so that sounds fair enough. I purchased a 500ml bottle of Ginger & Green Tea body lotion from Farmers for $10, thinking that I liked the smell, and that it was a new and interesting product. Turns out I don’t really like the smell that much, but of course that’s very subjective. What I think is more objective is that this lotion isn’t very thick at all (in fact, it kind of slops all over the room when I pump it out), and it doesn’t make me feel very moistened, and it definitely doesn’t last. Their body butter might be better, but if you want a big bottle of value that actually gets the job done, might I suggest Oatmeal and Shea Butter lotion from St. Ives that you can get for around $7 in a (good) supermarket or the Warehouse, and you can donate the $3 to your favourite charity instead?

(I’d offer up this body lotion as a dud trade, but I think it might come in handy for the impromptu foot-massage parties that pop up much more often than you might suspect!)

Mascara wars: EL vs Clinique

February 7th, 2009

I’ve road-tested Estee Lauder’s new Sumptuous Bold Volume Lifting Mascara (yes, that’s what the called it) and here’s what I reckon…

It’s way too clumpy and smudges every where upon application. Luckily I didn’t pay for it – I got a free sample from a magazine clipping. I do feel sorry for the poor chumps that pay for it though. Here it is (right) benchmarked against Clinique High Definition Lashes (left), which is a pretty sturdy mascara.

Strangely, the Estee Lauder has two good reviews on TotalBeauty.com. So maybe it’s just me who has trouble with it…

Another tip from the MK partay

February 4th, 2009

Apply dark eyeshadow in a 'V' around your eyebones
Here’s me and Jo at the Mary Kay party last week. Jo’s demonstrating another tip from Karyl – after applying a light base colour eyeshadow, apply dark eyeshadow in a ‘V’ around your brow bone, from outside corner to middle of you eyelid. And then blend, blend, blend.

btw if you wanna join Mary Kay to earn extra moolah just contact Karyl here (look at bottom of that post). Until end of February, joining fee is $99 (usually $229). Karyl is the loveliest lady ever, and she’ll be happy to chat to you about it.

Pride + Prejudice + Zombies

February 3rd, 2009

This from io9.com – a new book by Seth Grahame-Smith:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Complete with 20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice), this insanely funny expanded edition will introduce Jane Austen’s classic novel to new legions of fans.

This sounds awesome!
