Tonight, Matthew, I’m going to be…

Maria Callas!!

Here’s my friend Siobhan before going to a party as Maria Callas…but which one is she? Ok, so my ugly curtains are a dead give away. Siobhan is on the left.

Me and Siobhan played around for ages – thanks for your patience Siobhan. First, we did hair. The key was using a tail comb for a perfect middle-part. We used mousse and back-combing to maintain some volume (so not slick and flat on head). And Siobhan’s hair is actually too short to make a big bun at the back so we improvised with a rolled up pantyhose leg (pictured) I made a little pony tail at the nape of her neck, wrapped the pantyhose around (like it was a scrunchy) and then pinned hair in the ponytail back around the pantyhose so you couldn’t see the pantyhose at all.

Then we clipped in the big fake flower.

Make-up was basically loads of black liquid eyeliner, bold red lippie, loads of blush for cheek bones, heavy brows, and of course attitood, hehe.

I’d also like to add, that the amazing Siobhan made her own dress for the party – a beautiful red satin number that you can just see in the first pic above.

Homemade facials – a guest post

March 30th, 2009

When the lovely Megan said she was having a homemade facials day with her friend, we knew we had to get her to write about it for us, and so she did! Hurrah!

facials

I am a big fan of facials. Lying back, relaxing, while someone slathers something cool and gooey all aver your face. Even if, as the New York Times tells me, they don’t work, at the very least, you leave feeling refreshed. And feeling less stressed, and pampered, always makes you look prettier.

But in these straitened times, it feels a little indulgent to be spending $100 a month to have someone rub gunk on your face. Which is why my friends and I have decided to start having home facials with homemade products.

We started by cleansing our faces with normal cleanser, which, in this case was a Skinfood one (in keeping with the organic and green theme). We then lay on the couch with hot facecloths over our face – relaxing and pore opening!

We then scrubbed, with a scrub made of brown sugar, almond oil, and vanilla extract. You can buy all of that at the supermarket, and just mix them together – don’t use too much oil, or the sugar starts to dissolve. Don’t scrub too hard, just kind of smooth it over, and the sugar will start to dissolve on your skin. And once you are done, I’m pretty sure if you add some flour and an egg to the leftovers, you’d get a delicious cake.

After scrubbing, we applied the mask. We used one I found on the Martha Stewart website, but there are heaps of different ones on the internet.

Balancing Facial Mask
1 small avocado, mashed (about 2/3 cup)
1/2 small cucumber, finely grated (about 1/3 cup)
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
3 tablespoons green clay powder (sold at natural-foods stores)

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl, using a fork to blend. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Apply a thick layer of the mixture to clean, dry skin on your face and neck, avoiding the eye and lip areas. Keep fairly still for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the mask to dry in place. Wipe skin clean with a damp cloth; splash with cool water, and pat dry. makes enough for probably 6 applications – but it won’t keep for long.

You can buy the green clay powder at health food stores, in Wellington, they have it at Commonsense Organics. This mask, which did take a while to dry, reminded us a lot of this, which if you are the same age as me, you probably remember playing with as a teenager.

Anyway, once you have slathered it on, lie back with a glass of wine and some healthy snacks, and some good conversation. It’s best to warn anyone around your house that you have it on, as it really isn’t that nice a sight. Once it is dry, wash it off, and slather on the richest moisturiser you have, and you are done!

Our skin felt soft and smooth, and we definitely had a post-facial glow. Today, my co-facialist reports her skin looks very happy. Mine does too, but it also feels slightly sensitive – possibly from overly vigorous scrubbing.

And hey, even if it does nothing for your skin, an afternoon in the company of your Pretty Pretty Pretty friends can’t be bad, right?

Review: Wondercap

March 28th, 2009

NZ company Wondercap approached us to review their ingenious product. It’s a wheat-sack type cap that, upon heating in the microwave, is used with hair treatments to make hair wonderful. Aside from moisture treatments, Wondercap can also be used to speed up processing times of home-dyes and henna dying.

If you haven’t tried hair treatments at home you might not know what a nightmare they can be -  wrapping glad-wrap around your wet hair, or hot wet towels. And when I received the Wondercap in the post I was dubious about how it could make life easier.

But in the name of ‘pretty’ I persevered, and I’m glad I did. You see, after trying it, the next day at work a colleague actually said “Amy, your hair looks so soft and shiny today”. Honest-to-god, true story. And that stuff doesn’t happen to me often!

Back to the Wondercap, it’s easy to use. Just wet hair, glob on treatment (which was provided with the cap), microwave the Wondercap, pop it on your head and relax for while. The heat of the cap is in itself quite therapeutic, and I’m gonna enjoy using it on cold nights.

So thumbs up on the Wondercap.

The only downside is the cap made me feel a bit like the mushrooms from the MArio Brothers.

See a video of the Wondercap here.

Natural blonde

March 27th, 2009

(Most of the following is from  blog.wired.com)

Hydrogen peroxide is still used to blondify even the brunettest of us. But a newer, gentler, natural bleach has been developed from forest soil fungus by the Kao Corporation. I’m looking forward to this gentler bleach being developed as I’ve thought about going lighter, but the damage it does to my hair is real bad, especially since I straighten my hair so much.

Proctor & Gamble have also developed a colouring system they say “is the first significant advance in dye jobs in 50 years”. The new process works at a much lower pH. That makes it less alkaline, so it strips away much less of the lipid coating.

The other key advancement is a molecule that gobbles up free radicals. Free radicals form when those chemical bonds are broken, causing damage to the hair’s structure.

The system is already in stores: it’s Clairol’s Perfect 10.

Apparently, the dye won’t be available at your hair salon though for a while as they’ve created just 15 colors, which aren’t enough for fancy hair stylists. But the chemists said they’re adding more colors as fast as they can — when they get to 200, the salons might start carrying it.

Brown Paper Packages (not tied up with string)

I recently sent out a whole bunch of prizes that were long overdue. If you received one of these parcels (which didn’t actually have red hearts all over them, that’s to block addresses from stalkers!), it’d be awesome if you’d leave us a comment with your feedback on the goodies that you got. Thanking you kindly, and here’s to more parcels coming out!

Smart girls make the world a better place

March 27th, 2009

Everyone loves Tina Fey (that is a universal law!), and we also love Amy Poehler, her often partner-in-comedy. I especially love Amy Poehler’s web series on smart girls at the party – girls who are making the world a better place by being themselves, and this clip is super wonderfully awesome, about Ruby, a seven year old feminist. Enjoy!

Pretty Pretty People: Ginger Tonyx of Richter City

March 27th, 2009

We’re very very excited about going to our first roller derby match tomorrow! So excited that we asked Ginger from Richter City to take some time after her Good Morning debut to talk to us as well.

1. How did you get into roller derby in the first place?
I had a bunch of friends who were involved in the very beginnings of the league, and I jumped on board after an ill-fated New Years (too much alcohol and a break up and a tent = not good). My new year’s resolution was to do more things for myself and I joined derby because I loved the idea of skating and dressing up and having a pretend name and character… In the end though, I fell in love with roller derby because of the intense athleticism that is at the core of the sport, the amazing women that I skate with and the fun that we have.

2. Roller Derby can be seen to be about strength, which is an awesome thing, but it’s also about fighting other women, isn’t it? How do you think it fits into the feminist spectrum?
Hm, I wouldn’t describe roller derby as being “about fighting other women”, any more than I would say that rugby is “about fighting other men”. The contact is a part of a sport that is about agility, strength and power. Conceptualising derby in the feminist spectrum is interesting, and it’s something that bears a lot of thinking about; I believe it’s an amorphous situation, constantly changing depending on circumstance and situation, rather than one set in stone. I would say that as a rule derby deliberately plays with and subverts all sorts of stereotypical ideas about women and their sexuality – that is, by playing with these stereotypes and ideas we’re reclaiming power over them and making them a joke. Hah, we say!

3. How do you balance your in-rink persona and the real you or are they the same thing?
My in-rink persona, Ginger Tonyx, is an angry ex-Broadway broad (think: Valley of the Dolls). I love her, but I’ve had enough therapy to leave her in the rink! (Well, she sometimes comes to karaoke or out to the pub. But she’s very well-behaved then).

4. What do you wear/do to make yourself feel good?
I wear my red cowboy boots, red lipstick, vintage furs, cat ears, tutu (one at a time!); and I watch endless episodes of the Gilmore Girls, ride my bicycle along the waterfront, SKATE, op shop and knit/sew/cook.

5. How would you define pretty?
Pretty is playing with being a girl, and using the girly bits that work to the best of your advantage.

The bout will take place at on Saturday March 28, Wellington Basketball Association (behind Dance and Drama School) off Hutchinson Road and on the corner of Newtown and Mount Cook, Wellington.

Doors open at 6pm and the action begins at 7pm. Tickets are $10 and only available at the door. No eftpos so remember your cash.
