Pretty Pretty People: Annette from Nut and Bee

March 26th, 2009

“I love my job. I just spent several minutes pondering what colour a burp should be.”

As soon as I saw that Twitter, I knew that Annette had to be our next profile. We’ve mentioned our love for Nut and Bee many times before so it’s about time we found out more about what goes on behind the scenes.

Hello there! Nut and Bee is a range of character goods designed and made by Annette M. Russell in Auckland, New Zealand. We hope our drawings make you smile!

1. When and why did you start selling your cute characters?

I started Nut and Bee in December 2005. I had been posting some sketches and doodles online, and they were getting a good reception, so I thought it might be fun to make something out of them. I had a very small range of stationery to start with, and it was just a hobby for the first year or so, then I started working more actively on growing the business and now it’s my full time job.

2. How do you decide what fits into your branding? Do you ever draw things and go “no, that’s not consistent with the other stuff I do”?

My ‘branding’ is simply the style of my drawings, and I haven’t made any efforts to push them in a particular direction, so most of what I create naturally fits into the range. I do occasionally discard an idea because it might be misinterpreted! I’m keen to extend myself creatively so Nut and Bee may evolve over time, but I’m sure the underlying feeling of my work will be the same.

3. What are the constant best sellers?

My “Where Rainbows Come From” design is always a strong seller, and anything with cats on seems to do well!

4. What do you wear/do to make yourself feel good?

I’m not overly concerned with fashion, but I love perfume. A nice fragrance floating about always brightens up my day, and I particularly like oil-based blends from small houses like Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Arcana and Possets Perfumes. I also enjoy soft snuggly cardigans, sweet lip balm, fancy soap, and taking relaxing baths.

5. How would you define pretty?

Pretty is gentle and natural and fun, and comes from inside as well as out!>

Makeup Direct’s new West Auckland store

March 25th, 2009

Makeup Direct has opened a store in the Westgate shopping centre in Massey.

For those of you who live out in the western area, an ad in the Western Leader and the North Western newspapers allows you to pick up a free lip/eye liner (no purchase required) from Makeup Direct.  If you still have that paper lying around – cut the ad out and bring it in to receive your free eye/lip liner. (only available at the Westgate store).

This from Makeup Direct:

If you haven’t visited our new Westgate store or our Darby Street store for a while you must come in and check out some of our new products in store.  We have a fantastic new mineral cosmetic brand from the USA called Colorevolution.

COLOREVOLUTION is 100% Mineral Cosmetics. As a lot of you may have heard the latest talk in cosmetics today is all about mineral cosmetics.  But what a lot of us don’t know is that a lot of the mineral cosmetics on the market are not actually 100% mineral.  It may only contain a very small amount of minerals which is what most cosmetics already have in them anyway.  That’s why we love Colorevolution – it is 100% minerals and this is very hard to find in the market place today.

Why we like COLOREVOLUTION COSMETICS

  • because it’s pure 100% mineral cosmetics
  • the price is right!  Don’t need to pay $80 – $120 for foundations – just pay $39.99
  • The foundation content is nearly twice the amount as most of the other ones on the market.
  • The selection of eyeshadow colors are amazing – blues, greens, golds, blacks…so many to choose from!

Servilles hair show

March 24th, 2009

Fans of Servilles salons in Auckland might love this vid from the hair-art stage show at the Chch town hall, or else anyone who loves pretty hair.

Just a couple of observations. I don’t know why they thought they could get models to dance. Or why they have a bobble-head doll hosting the vid.

What a beautiful fiasco!

Fiasco LogoTo Amy and I, no pampering session is complete without a relaxing drink in hand. That’s why we’re really excited to announce that the lovely Fiasco Wines will be providing us with wine on the night of our First Birthday Party on April 18. Fiasco are a new wine label from Malborough, and we adore the way that they’re twittering and blogging about their experiences. We’ll be trying their Sauvignon Blanc, their Gewurztraminer and also getting a sneak peak of their new Black Pearl Pinot Noir so we can twitter-review it the next day. We’re really looking forward to seeing you at our party and having a drink with us, but we must insist that you DO NOT try rolling on barrels. Trust us on this one. It always ends badly.

Personal tragedy and personal awesome

March 15th, 2009

On Friday night the most terrible thing happened. I was carrying my makeup back to my desk in a Pam’s ziplock bag when the bottom fell out of it, and everything fell to the ground. My favourite bright green eyeshadow that my mother originally purchased at a 100 yen shop in like 1994 smashed into a million pieces. The bright blue shadow in the same case was okay, and yes, I do have a Napolean in a very similar shade of green, but I’m still gutted. So today I went to Warehouse Stationary and bought a pencil case to use to keep my makeup together, and also a nice paint brush to use for my eye shadow (and used garden shears to cut it to a decent length).

But enough about me! Here are some links that have made me very happy this week.

Review: Workout Zone skincare

March 14th, 2009

Kiwi GP, Dr Rosy Fenwicke, takes multi-tasking to the next level with her world-first skin care system. Her idea is to make your skin care routine part of your fitness routine, which apparently has many benefits to your face.

You can read about Dr Rosy, and the science behind her products at your own leisure.  I’m here to review, based on samples I got from Kirk’s recently.

Step 1 of the system is a cleanser, which you apply before you work out. It’s a fine, gentle facial scrub that’s also easy to rinse off.

Step 2 of the system is a clay-based moisturiser that you apply after the scrub and before you work up a sweat.  This a thick cream that takes a bit of time to work into the skin properly. After you’ve finished your work out, you rinse your face, shower with Step 3′s body wash (which i didn’t try), and then apply Step 4 – a facial cream with SPF20 to take you through the rest of your day. Step 4 leaves a glittery effect on the skin, and not particularly good under make-up.

As someone who doesn’t work out that often, this product was never gonna be great for me. But I do have some irks about these products which would put me off if I was a gym-bunny.

Firstly, if I were exercising outside, I’d want an SPF moisturiser, but Step 2 doesn’t have an SPF rating. So it’s only good for inside the gym, not for jogging and so on.

Secondly, the system adds a lot of fuss to your exercise routine. You have to scrub and rinse your face pre-workout, then massage the clay stuff into your face (and this step does take some time), and then rinse off again. Which means you probably have to shower at the gym which isn’t something all of us like to do. As well as having to carry all these products around with you.

Dr Fenwicke has come up with an interesting point about skin, moisture and sweat though. And if the routine actually works it may be worth the effort. I only had 3-day samples to go on. She also offers some good advice not to wipe off sweat with a towel during a workout, but rather massage the moisture back into the skin.

“Sweat is made up of minerals and 99 percent water so you are not wiping off toxins as some people think, just losing minerals and moisture.”
