Agent in the field report: make up sale in Manners Mall

April 21st, 2009

Shannon sent us a twitter last night telling us about a huge makeup sale in Manners Mall, and today she sent us in these field reports:

  • shannonq@prettyx3 Multiple tweets to follow! Definitely worth a look in – main makeup brands they have are Maybelline, Revlon, CoverGirl, Loreal.
  • shannonq@prettyx3 Huge selection of lip stuff (mostly <$10). Foundations are mostly darker colours. Not much skincare.
  • shannonq@prettyx3 Large range of perfumes but didn’t look terribly hard at that (too many people spraying liberally).
  • shannonq@prettyx3 Three lip glosses, a L’Oreal foundation (of which they only had six – score!), eyeliner + mascara for $63! Score!

Edit: shannonq@prettyx3 Oh yeah, the sale’s til Sat – open 9am-7pm Tues-Fri, and then 1pm-6pm Saturday. Sounds like they’re getting even more stock, too.

So if you’re in the area, sounds like a good thing to check out. Thanks for the reports, Shannon!

Defining what Pretty is

April 21st, 2009

As you may know, we hate it when a company tries to tell us what it means to be feminine or beautiful. That’s why every time we talk to a fabulous woman, we ask her what her definition of ‘Pretty’ is, in order to assemble a big picture. So, on Saturday night at our big One Year party, we asked everyone present to give us a definition in order to win Linden Leaves & Workout|Zone prizes, and this is what they came up with:

  • Marie A: My definition of pretty is natural beauty, inside & out!!
  • Robyn: Pretty is… the other side of the mirror
  • Michele Stack: My definition of pretty is: clean confidence
  • Morgan: My definition of pretty is being happy in your own skin and accepting that without our ‘flaws’ and differences people would  be boring to look at and admire
  • Meg W: Pretty = doing nice things to make you feel nice
  • Anon: a bubbly fun forum for pretty people & friends, old & new
  • Anj: smart + confident & friendly
  • Gabrielle: pretty is lovely
  • Karen: pretty is as pretty does
  • Klara H: pretty is a smile and way girl is pretty. Pretty me and all my friends
  • Frances: pretty is shining with confidence
  • Chiara: pretty has nothing to do with your actual looks
  • Maria: pearls
  • Raeanna: dresses
  • Theresa: pretty is as pretty does
  • Julie: pretty: artfully arranged to make you smile
  • Dee: confidence, and humorous
  • Megan: Pretty is a smile when you are down, that makes you feel 1000x better
  • Melissa: confidence and smiles!
  • Sarah R: pretty = adj, delightful! Delicious! Extraordinarily pleasing to the eye. Sexy.
  • Tanz: The feeling of the sun on ur skin after a long winter
  • Heather: I don’t really know pretty, but I know what I like
  • Kowhai: Pretty is light & eyecatching, not necessarily substantial or beautiful but smiles if light are good.

So there’s some definitions for you. But you know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words? What we’d love for you to do now is to create or find pictures (and give them proper attribution!) that you think best represent one of these definitions (or find a bunch of pictures and enter a bunch of times). Add your picture of the definition to the comments and next Monday we’ll decide on a winner, and before then, we’ll come up with a fancyass prize. Any questions?

Review of Garnier Eye Roller

April 20th, 2009

rollerI wanted to review this product as soon as I heard about it, but looks like it’s been reviewed to death already. However, I did go a bit further than some other reviews by applying this product to just my left eye for a month to see if there was any visible difference…more about that later.

It got really mixed reviews on totalbeauty.com ranging from 1 out of 10 to 10 out of 10. With this product I think your expectations are key to your rating. If you believe that any product will get rid dark circles and smooth wrinkles, then sure, you’re gonna be disappointed by this product. But if, like me, you have low expectations of  products actually living up to their claims, you might just like this product.

It is fun to use, and cooling and soothing to the eyes. It is easy to apply – no dipping grubby fingers into a pottle of eye cream – just roll, baby. And you can take it anywhere and use it any time since it’s not much bigger than a lip gloss.

My biggest ‘must’ for any eye cream is it suitably with eye make-up. Some eye creams I’ve used glob-up when you apply make-up over top and smear or rub off. But this gel is fine, though it feels wet for a few minutes after application so you have to wait a little before putting make-up over top.

So after a month of applying only to my left eye each morning and night there is no discernable difference. I still have deep dark circles of the same hue under each eye. It’s not a miracle product afterall. But I still like the cool and freshness it gives my poor tired-from-blogging-too-much eyes, and it’s not bad for around NZ$17.

So much post-party love

April 19th, 2009

Hello my beautiful ladies
Thank you all so much for coming along tonight. I hope you enjoyed it, I hope you learnt something new, and i hope you picked up something fun to take away with you.

Just a quick thanks again to the people who helped make it happen – Fiasco Wines obviously lubed us up real good – they’re doing their Black Pearl Pinot Noir launch tomorrow – details here:  http://fiascowines.wordpress.com/2009/04/15/dont-forget/

And you can buy their wines here: http://fiascowines.wordpress.com/wine-orders/ We would love it if you did buy them and let them know why you did – they’re a new company, and I think that they did the right thing hooking up with such smart intelligent girl readers, and I hope they get rewarded for that.

Also thanks to www.lindenleaves.co.nz for their Herbalist  Face Care Packs that we had to give away, (and Lou Draper at Rockstar PR (http://prettyprettypretty.com/2009/04/01/pretty-pretty-people-lou-draper-from-rockstar-pr/) for making it happen, as well as Dr Rosy Fenwicke from Workout Zone (http://prettyprettypretty.com/2009/04/06/in-the-workout-zone/) for her generous prizes and sample giveways, and finally to Karyl (http://prettyprettypretty.com/2008/08/20/pretty-pretty-people-karyl-from-mary-kay/) (that I owe some money to and I’ll send you a cheque!) for the amazing Mary Kay Satin Hands kit that we all fell in love with (“my hands are soft like kittens” was a twitter comment), and also the amazing selection of samples we all got, and also to Eleanor who makes Dollop, who gave me and Amy secret presents we’ll no doubt blog about sometime.

The bathbombs in your bag are made with milk powder, citric acid and baking soda, and are either orange, lemon, cinnamon & vanilla or cinnamon, chocolate& vanilla flavoured. If you don’t have a bath, break it down in to chunks and soak your feet in it (use a roasting dish if need be).  The CDs are a s ampler of awesome women, and if you like them, buy their albums!

I had such an amazing night – last thanks go to Megan for her red lipstick coverage, all you fantastic girls who came along with clothes to swap (and mountains to donate to the Sallies), the fantastic amazing new people who were shy to come along but who I hoped really enjoyed it,  anyone who sang with me, and finally to my beautiful partner in crime Amy, who makes this website what it really is. <3

So much love xojo

Estee Lauder Gift with purchase

April 16th, 2009

I can’t find a picture of the gift anywhere online, but it is available from Kirk’s in Wellington from today to 3rd May.

Here’s what you get if you buy two EL products:

  • two make-up bags
  • mini bottle of Sensuous fragrance
  • Sumptuous mascara
  • lippie
  • quad eyeshadow in browns and pinks
  • Resilience Lift firming creme
  • Some sort of serum

If you’re into gifts with purchases, but don’t wanna get suckered into buying a crappy second product just for the sake of the freeby, then maybe we can help. Here’s a few EL products I’ve reviewed on the site that I recommend:

Cream blush sticks

foundation

concealer

Perfectionist Serum (i think it may come with the gift)

I don’t like their liquid liners though – there are  many better liners out there for much cheaper.  And I don’t like the Sumptuous mascara that comes with the gift.

You could also take a look at totalbeauty.com and see what others think about the rest of EL’s line.

Knickers for Africa

April 15th, 2009

africaSome lovely ladies at my work are coordinating a ‘Knickers for Africa’ collection drive. Second-hand bras are being collected by Breastmates (New Zealand’s Speciality Breastfeeding Store) to send to women and girls in villages in Zimbabwe.

So if you come to our party on Saturday, bring along some old bras too, and I’ll ensure they go to a good place.

Mag review: M2Woman autumn 2009

April 15th, 2009

So there’s been a men’s magazine in NZ for a while called M2, and apparently they have launched a women’s magazine, and I bought issue two when I went to Tauranga, for lighthearted entertainment and the free sunscreen sample. It’s not a magazine I would bother buying again really, even if the name didn’t sound so much like a sleazy personal ad (actually that link is hilarious, not sleazy). Here’s my notes on the good and bad:

  • Good: that when they do the interviews with women on the street, they ask them about buying NZ products and if they’ve had a molemap, as well as asking them about the latest trends and destinations.
  • Bad: they lack basic fact-checking. In the events page, they say that Coldplay have never played in New Zealand before, but I’ve seen them at the Big Day Out (from the stands, I didn’t really care for them) and I know they’ve played the Logan Campbell Centre, and probably at least another gig as well. This makes me ANGRY!
  • Good: at least their review of The Women calls it “predictable fun and a girl fest”, which is totally the nice way of saying “it’s shit”.
  • Good: their holiday destinations are Oman and Venezuela, and they’re written by locals, which is an interesting change from Thailand/London/The Pacific.
  • Bad: their interview with Anne Hathaway, which has admittedly gorgeous pictures, is even more banal than most women’s magazines interviews are, as it’s all about her new contract with Lancome.
  • Good: they did a photoshoot on the Mouraki Boulders. Pretty!
  • Bad: there is a totally nonsensical article that surely exists only because Southern Cross put out a press release that loosely body image and child health (and when I say “loosely” I mean like Karl Lagerfeld wearing Beth Ditto’s panties x1000) and they try to drag out the article as a ‘theme’ throughout the magazine which means that the (one page! but listed on the cover!) story about Jeanette Thomas is subtitled “TV and radio star, Jeanette Thomas, on being a mum, getting her carpets cleaned and body image vs child welfare”, which at 20 words is nearly as long as this whole part:

“A recent survey suggests that we care more about body image than the health of our children. What do you make of this?”

    “Not very much.”

Heh. Okay, so I did cut short her answer, but really, it was lame.

  • Good: I really like the headpieces made out of flowers in the wildflowers fashion shoot.

So yes, seriously light on content, design that makes advertorial look like editorial & vice versa and nothing memorable to take away (I had to look up my notes to write this). Yawn. It joins the pile of old magazines I have to give away (which I will post about as soon as I’ve done an inventory).
