While perusing Kirk’s today I saw this sign. On the 11th and 12th June, Linden Leaves, who we love, are having a lady come in and hand and feet treatments (I think it’s $20 for hands and $35 for feet). You can make an appointment instore at Kirk’s (Wellington).

Mecca Cosmetica beauty election

May 27th, 2009

mecca

A judging panel, instore experts, and you the cosmetic-going public all got to vote in Mecca Cosmetica’s own beauty product awards. Results on the best products on sale at Mecca Cosmetica are available here.

Mecca’s product lines are on the pricey side but there are some real gems among them. I can recommend the Kevyn Aucoin Brow Pencil, winner of the ‘Best for Brow’ award; and the Stila Smudge  Pots (though in winter they tend to harden up too much), winner of the ‘Ultimate Eyeliner’ award.

From the sheer number of award categories (I estimate around 100 beauty product categories were in the beauty election), it’s hard to discern which products are actually worth a second look. But the good thing about Mecca is being able to bowl up to the counters and have a play around and see for yourself. (And then you can always see if you can get it cheaper at strawberrynet.com – cheeky aye.)

Please help me choose new glasses

May 25th, 2009

I’ve had the same frames since 2005. They’re pretty beaten up. Also, my right eye has gotten better! And Amy got new glasses! So I’m going to too! Which ones should I choose?

What glasses should Jo buy?

  • The black-framed Pro:Designs (46%, 13 Votes)
  • The tortoise-shelled Jai Kudos (39%, 11 Votes)
  • The fancy-legged Pro:Designs (15%, 4 Votes)

The look of the future

May 24th, 2009

Via Jezebel (of course), here’s a video from 1930 that shows what we’ll be wearing in 2000. Electric belts, aluminium and boys who have pockets for “candy for cuties” feature prominently. Oooh swish!

It’s ball season

May 23rd, 2009

Aaahh, I remember my school balls. Both years I went, my mum made my dress for me. At 16, I went in a dark red empire-line number with capped sleeves – very conservative. The following year I wore a black, shiny, PVC dress – again with an empire-line but also a fish tail and mesh sleeves and patent red shoes. I thought I was awesome, but I’d hate to see the photos now, with so so so much hindsight.

Boy do I wish I was a teenager now going to a ball though. There’s limitless choice of dresses at almost any budget. You can look on trademe or any number of online stores for super bargains. And there’s so many more ranges of make-up and styling tools for hair. Kids these days don’t know how lucky they are aye.

Here’s what I’d like to wear if I was invited to a ball this season (all these are from US sites, but do ship world-wide):

Incoco dry application nails

May 21st, 2009

When I heard about these, I had to try them – stick on nail polish. And it’s as easy as it sounds. No mess, instant, lasts a long time without chips. But expensive. In the pack pictured, you get one full application (with 10 spare nails, so kinda 2 applications) for $14.50. I got mine from a pharmacy, though incoco.co.nz sells them for $12.95 online. Plus you get a little nail file and buffer and cuticle stick.

But I reckon for a special occasion or as a treat they are perfect. The finish looks professional, and is so fun and easy. It’s only day 2, but no signs of chipping yet.

Only problem is the sizing – was hard to find one to fits my little fingers. But that’s not a big problem. And the pharmacy I bought mine from was nearly sold out so I didn’t get much choice for colour…these things are obviously already too popular.
