NZNTM: Cover Girl Week

May 15th, 2009

Okay, first of all. Remember when Kowhai and I made Cover Girl videos a couple of ANTM cycles ago? Well at a hungover drunken New Year’s Day bbq at Amy’s house, I got a couple of more people to give us their best efforts, including Tom:

And Robyn:

And if you watch the behind-the-scenes footage you can watch PPP PAG Hadyn being forced into lipgloss, and who doesn’t want to see that?

But anyways, now, behind the jump, I will put my thoughts on tonight’s episode. Warning – I use a lot of capital letters:

Maxi to mini in a jiffy

May 13th, 2009

maxiMaxi dresses were a welcome trend last summer. It seems such a shame to let them get musty over over winter. Which is why I really liked Diana Eng’s idea for turning a maxi dress into a stylish mini. I reckon if you wear you new DIY mini with tights and a slinky wool top, it’d look awesome AND warm.

Seeing red

May 6th, 2009

Most women in New Zealand do not realise that heart disease is the leading single cause of death in women. To help raise this awareness, a group of fashion designers like Annah Stretton, in association with Go Red For Women have put some original designer red dresses up for auction on Trade Me. If you are a size 10/small, you could purchase and buy one of these pretty dresses, and help raise money for the cause. If you’re not a size small, well really, what relevancy could heart disease possibly have to you anyway?

Prettify your home with old magazines

May 4th, 2009

Those of you who have been to my house know that I have masses of hallway walls, and when my hallway isn’t crammed full of girls fighting teeth and nail for the best clothes in a clothing swap, it can be a little empty and white and boring, so I decided that I needed some art to cheer it up.

One pile of old Frankie magazines later, I had a bunch of pretty pictures ready to go into some frames I got for $2 each at the Warehouse. Glee! I adore Frankie’s artwork, their posters adorn my bedroom walls. I have a whole bunch of other pictures that I might try making into photoblocks with instructions from Miss Sue.

Queen of blending vid: gold and copper

After watching this vid I think I’m going to have to buy the MAC penny shadestick. Also, I’ve posted heaps today because I am supposed to be doing some work but I’m way better at procrastinating.

Ingredients to avoid

May 3rd, 2009

totalbeauty.com has an easy to follow, researched list of ingredients to avoid when buying beauty products. I know you’ve read these like  a thousand times, and when you look at the ingredients list on a bottle of shampoo at the supermarket you can’t remember the bad ones.

Below, I’ve listed the bad ingredients by name, and attempted to make a memory devices to help us remember them. For example, I have Sodium Laureth down-pat now, because it bubbles like soda and laureth rhymes with death – Sodium Laureth – soda of death).

  • Sodium Laureth (aka 1,4-Dioxane) found in your bubbling products. Remember, ‘soda of death’
  • Phthalates found in deodorants. Remember, it rhymes with ‘pilates’ where you’re likely to use deodorant.

OK, so to be honest, I only came up with memory devices for those two. Here are the others. Can you help me out here?

Thimerosal in your mascara

Dibutyl Phthalate or DBP, Toulene, Formaldehyde in nail poilsh

Quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea

Some thoughts on last night’s NZNTM

May 3rd, 2009
  • Jacqui Brown is so fantastic. I love her so much. I also love her teal nailpolish. And Ruby is so lovely. I’m so stoked she won. I also think it’s hilarious how vacant they made Rebecca Rose appear to be.
  • And they’re wearing animal costumes! This is the best episode ever! Except for how much Autozamm suck. Nick was my best friend’s little brother’s best friend, so it’s weird to see him grown up. And with a receding hairline even! How did I get this old?
  • They have really ugly sunglasses. I suspect they were given them.
  • I hate that Laura is worrying about her boyfriend. I expect better of her. Be a professional. Hosana has the right attitude. I like how hard she works, I really appreciate it.
  • I like their look and outfits on this shoot a lot. Rocking the pin-up look. Ruby looks smoking hot although I shouldn’t say that about a 17 year old. And I want to punch the photographer when he suggests that she needs to get on the treadmill.
  • Kristobelle’s photo has NO NECK! And they don’t comment on it! Tyra would never let that happen.
  • Ruby’s red lipstick is awesome and I’m jealous of it. I really need to get myself to a MAC counter.
  • And hurray for Rebecca Rose leaving, she totally creeped me out.

Cupcakes of Awesome

May 1st, 2009

I recently saw on Flickr that the divine Miss Sue has been making cupcake towers out of vinyl records. How awesome! But I was so sad to read that she says she says she sucks at making cupcakes, because really, they’re so easy to make! I make cupcakes all the time,  so I thought I would share my super top secret recipe for Piña Colada cupcakes.

These ones are a sinister green colour because I made them for the first birthday of my favourite cafe Green Land, but you can make them any colour you want. Here’s how:

  1. Get yourself a box of vanilla cake mix. You can use your brand of choice, but I have a personal preference for Betty Crocker.
  2. Make the batter according to the box. Drain approximately half the juice of out of a can of crushed pineapple or pineapple chunks, and either save it for drinking or throw it away. Add all the fruit and the remaining juice to the batter. Add in a cup of desiccated or shredded coconut.  Stir it all well.
  3. Put the batter into muffin tins lined with paper/foil cases. If your local supermarket only has boring paper cases, check out your nearest $2 store or Spotlight for more interesting ones.
  4. Bake for about 15 minutes at 180 degrees.
  5. Toast some shredded coconut either under the grill or in a nonstick frypan. You can tell it’s toasted when it starts to smell lovely. If you want to replicate grass, add a couple of drops of food colouring.
  6. Your cake mix may have come with a packet of icing – if so, make this according to the directions. You’ll probably want more than it’s given you though, so add in extra icing sugar, soft butter, and also a spoonful of rum for flavour. Feel free to add food colouring at this stage if that’s how you roll.
  7. Slather the icing on top of the cupcakes and sprinkle with toasted coconut. Decorate how you see fit. In the photo pictured I used “Happy Birthday” confetti from the Dollar Save Store. They have all kinds of awesome stuff there.
  8. Share the cupcakes with good people. Enjoy!
