My favourite outfit: Tom Beard

June 6th, 2009

linen-suit Today Tom Beard from the Wellingtonista shares his favourite outfit. We love that we have male readers, but when are you ladies gonna send us in a picture eh?

Actually, I have lots of favourites, but this has to be top.

I’m wearing a bespoke linen suit by Mandatory, and a custom tab-collar cotton shirt from Rixon Groove. The tie is from Little Brother, with a vintage pearl tie pin from Marvel, and the Gatsby cap by Goorin is from Rex Royale. Out of shot, I’m wearing two-tone pointed brogues from Atticus and a pair of cufflinks that I believe belonged to my paternal great-grandfather and are the closest thing I have to a family heirloom. The whole ensemble is set off delightfully by the ultimate accessory: a beautiful “Shirley” from the house of McGill.

Nothing beats a tailored suit for elegance and flattery: as soon as I put it on I feel 10 kilos lighter and two inches taller. What I especially like about this outfit is the balance of formality and summery casualness. I tried it first with a lighter shade of tie and no cap, and it looked like I was off to a wedding. The floppy cap gave the whole outfit the jauntiness of a garden party from The Great Gatsby, which was the exactly look I was after for Amy’s 1920′s-themed party.

The jean genie

June 6th, 2009

If you had three jean-genie wishes what would they be? Probably something like:

  1. I wish my legs looked slimmer/filled-out;
  2. I wish my bum looked buxom/smaller;
  3. I wish my jeans accentuated my curves

These are all really wishes for obtaining the right proportions, aesthetically speaking. Well, Jean Genie says the magic is all in the cut and colour of your jeans.

First tip: Control the appearance of your thighs by choosing either a flat colour (for enlarging spindly legs) or a two toned wash (for slimming). Look at my diagram. Both rectangles are the same dimensions. But the two tone looks slimmer even with the lighter colour.

Second tip: Make your butt look bigger with small pockets, and smaller with big pockets. easy.

Third tip: They’re not always in fashion, but get bootcuts or flares to balance and accentuate curves. Straight cut and skinny jeans will widen the look of hips, because in comparison the legs look way slim. That’s why boots look so good with skinny jeans because it provides the balance toyour figure that bootcuts and flares give.

Those are my tips. Gleaned from years of jean shopping. My fave place to buy jeans in Welly is Hurrican Jeans. There staff are helpful as and knowledgeable and they give student discounts.

Sales

June 4th, 2009

There’s a whole lot of consumer opportunities out there at the mo. First, the Estee Lauder Gift Me gift with purchase. The gift includes a nice handbag and a bunch of great treats.

Then there’s the mad $5 (US) teeshirts at threadless. With the kiwi dollar still that’s an amzing deal. Shipping costs a bit shared across a number of tees or people it’s peanuts. I’ve bought a bunch of tees fromthreadless in the past and they never disappoint. Hurry because the sale ends o the 8th June.

And of course Aussie brands Cue and Veronica Maine and Witchery each have huge sales at the mo. Each have a good number 50% off racks.

And luxury brand l’occitane have a big sale. You can purchase online or instore.

Leave a comment if you know of any more must-see sales.

Favourite outfits: Mike Riversdale

June 4th, 2009

In this picture, Mike is wearing:

… a cheeky grin, a subtle off the shoulder red number with matching red nail polish.

The string affair holding in the monster belly was supplied by Tether The Beast and actibviated by a coordinated effort from all The Riversdales

The “no hair” was by Mistake Of Miramar and discovered to be such when watching Little Britain to discover the character of Daffyd ISN’T BALD!

The arm tat peeking into the picture is “The Classic” obtained by someone or other in Swindon (UK) when I was young … I love it.

And the whole ensemble is topped off by a solid silver Wellington hand crafted wedding ring … she loves when when I wear this.

What’s your favourite outfit?

June 3rd, 2009

We’d like to introduce a new feature here on PPP, which is all about you. If you’ll allow us to misquote Chicago for a minute – “you’re the meaning in our lives, you’re our inspiration”. So we want to know what you’re wearing. We get blasted by too many pictures of too many models wearing unrealistic clothing every day, so we’d like to keep it real. Who you are, and what you wear is what we care about. Therefore we’d love you to email us – jo@prettyprettypretty.com with a picture or a link to you wearing your favourite outfit, and a bit about what you’re wearing and why you like it. Okay? Awesome. I’ll start.

So in this picture, I am wearing:

  • Sequinned shrug from Ezibuy: I like that this makes me into a human discoball – it’s fun riding in a cab in the sunshine in this, but because it’s not lined, it does irritate my arms. If I’m smart I will wear a barrier cream under it, but if I’m not, then I end up with red itchiness. So that’s not ideal.
  • The bronze-coloured belt is also from Ezibuy. I like wearing it to bring out my waist – even if I make my waist very high up in it. I also like how thick and chunky it is – to me it’s like strapping on superhero armour. It makes me tough and hot.
  • What you think is a dress is actually a dress from Farmers that is a size too small for me and therefore way too short, with a skirt from Farmers that is too big and stupid-mid calf length over the top of it, pulled up to right under the boobs. That way it’s a perfect length!
  • My red bra is from Lane Bryant in New York. It’s padded (although I have taken out the airbags), deeply plunged, and very hot. It is my party bra, and I don’t care if it looks tacky that it shows. I’m tacky.
  • My necklace is amber beads that I stole from my mother’s jewellary box, which I think she stole from her mother. Sometimes I wear more over-the-top jewellary with this outfit, but apparently that night I was trying to be more subtle.
  • My makeup and hair in this photo were done by Amy in a Mad Men inspired style. I’m not normally this glam-looking. And if I look grumpy in the photo, well it was Election Night and we lost to the Dark Side.

Faux French manicure with Incoco

June 2nd, 2009

dsc03136A little while ago I blogged about Incoco dry nail polish. The pack I bought came with some sample french tips – basically a white strip and a natural-coloured sticker to stick over the top. It looks lovely, although there is a prominent ridge between the white and the ‘natural’. It lasts well for around a week. (After that it starts to peel and look shabby.)

It is by far the easiest french manicure I’ve tried. No messy nail polishes and no spending an hour in a salon. Only 5 mins to apply to both hands, no drying time needed. And easy to achieve very good results.

How does she do it: Eleanor

June 1st, 2009

eleanorHere’s Eleanor (of dollop.co.nz) talking to me about aromatics, starting up a small business, and her skin care routine. She doesn’t use fancy creams, foaming cleansers or freaky chemicals… yet she has utterly radiant skin. And she reveals how she does it all in this very first ppp podcast.

Have a listen – download it (right click “save link as…”) or plug in some headphones and listen. Warning: it’s half an hour long,  but totally worth it.

You might need to turn it up loud as we’re quiet sounding (due to the fact we’re having a few drinks at the sometimes noisy Matterhorn Bar here in Wellywood).
