Gracie Lou on Trademe

July 19th, 2009

Remember a little while ago we told you about Gracielou.co.nz – a NZ online cosmetics store that sells great brands at great prices. Well, I just found out Gracie Lou sells on trademe.co.nz too. And sometimes it’s a little cheaper to buy their products on trademe. I just bought this great looking Smashbox interchangeable brush set for only $8.50! (=$3.50 postage). That’s friggin’ awesome. Thanks Gracie Lou ;-)

Mascara wars: MAC vs Clinique

July 12th, 2009

mascara

My latest mascara review pits MAC’s Zoom Lash (pictured left) with Clinique’s High Impact (right).

MAC says Zoom Lash is an:

instant volume mascara power-lifts the lashes into length, curls them up…builds them faster than you can wink! Precision control wand glides smoothly down lashes to provide a gorgeously silky upward “sweep”.

Clinique says High Impact:

Kicks up the volume and length of each and every lash for a look that’s lusher, plusher, bolder. Pure, deep colour only adds to the impact.

I reckon High Impact is the superior mascara. At $36au for 8grams, it’s a bit pricier than Zoom Lash ($25au). But the Zoom Lash looks clumpier, smudges more and is more messy to apply. I keep having the clean the wand of goopy mascara which is a waste.

Totalbeauty.com readers look like they agree too, giving the Zoom Lash an average rating of 6.2 out of 10, and High Impact rating of 8.2.

It’s a different website’s anniversary and you’re invited

July 7th, 2009

This might not be considered strictly PPP business, but I know a lot of our readers like to dress up, and I know that I like to party with you guys, so I’d love it if you wanted to come along to help me celebrate TEN YEARS of my own personal site – www.hubris.co.nz. Here’s the invitation:

Fight of the Conchords

July 7th, 2009

conchords

I have the same argument every time I talk about Flight of the Conchords, which as it happens is quite often. I reckon Bret is way hotter than Jemaine, so I just don’t get why some of my friends think Jemaine is. I know the Conchords have wives and stuff and I don’t mean to belittle their status as talented entertainers, but I really need to know what you think…

I want to settle this once and for all. Who's prettier...

You put the lime in the coconut, you rub it all down

July 7th, 2009

Coconut and lime is one of my favourite combinations. I drink a lot of piña coladas, and Amy gave me a lime & coconut scented candle for Xmas. So when I was browsing at the Newtown Mall Pharmacy while waiting an agonisingly long time for some drugs, I couldn’t help but buy some Bodycology coconut lime hand & body lotion. It was $17 for a 354ml bottle, which is a little bit expensive, but I was looking to treat myself, and was hoping it would be worth my while. The verdict? Not so much. The scent is initially delicious, but then it can be a bit much after a while, because it’s so sweet. The lime afternotes is kind of like Fruit Burst candy. The pump bottle is handy, but the lotion is really slow to absorb into your skin, and then the feeling of being moisturised wears off pretty quickly. This is the sort of thing that you should relegate to guest bathrooms for people to use after washing their hands.  It’s not an all-over-body luxurious overnighter, if you know what I mean. My search for the perfect coconut beauty product continues…

Edit: also, from their website: “Advanced Beauty Systems, Inc. does not test the finished products on animals” – the FINISHED products? But sure, go ahead and test all the ingredients out first…

MAC’s brush finder tool

July 4th, 2009

MAC’s US website has this brush finder tool that lets you browse through all their brushes to find what’s right for you. Personally I’m a bit intimidated by the huge MAC range of brushes. But this tool lets me figure out where to start.

Roller Derby girls

July 3rd, 2009

You may recall our post about Ginger Tonix from the Richter City Rollers. Well I finally got to see these roller derby girls in person at the Richter City Rollers grading day this week. These girls are awesome. With race names like Tuff Bikkies, Lux Vengence, Sneaky Darkie, Suffer Jet and so on. In fact, roller derby race names have to be registered, and here’s the database of registered names.

Uniforms are typically stripey socks, fishnets, frilly knickers and leopard skin. Plus ‘tude, lots of ‘tude. Most of the kiwi girls get their roller derby gear from sincityskates.com.

The grading seemed to go well – lots of enthusiastic ladies showing their super skate skills. While there was too many press-ups for my liking, the skating drills, falling drills, and blocking drills looked so much fun.

Helping handIf you wanna join the Richter City Rollers in Welly team check them out here, else here’s some other links to NZ leagues:

Just the thing for winter…

yellowShuella presents the shoe-umbrella. RRP: $US49.95 + free international shipping. 4 colours to choose from.

This quote from flossie.com:

More often than not, a gorgeous pair of heels or boots were not designed for walking in puddles, or running through a downpour. That’s why American, Rebecca Miller invented the Shuella. A plastic over-bootie, that does up with Velcro and keeps your shoes (including high heels) safe from splashes. Available in bright statement colours (buttercup yellow, pink, green) or the more subtle black, the Shuella eliminates the need for a  second pair of more practical shoes, and folds up into your carry bag and slips into your bag when you reach your destination.

You can win a pair of your very own by leaving a comment at the bottom of flossies’ post.
