Review: Dry shampoo. That’s right, dry shampoo!

We’ve had a fair amount of discussion here at ppp on greasy hair and I’ve collected a few great tips. I have a fringe and don’t like washing my hair that often so I now wash my fringe separately (instead of washing my whole head); pin back my bangs over night so my forehead doesn’t grease it up; and have talc at the ready.

batiste tropicalBut life has changed for me somewhat, having discovered Batiste Dry Shampoo. It really is like a shampoo in a can.

The idea is that you spray the can at your hair, just like you would with hairspray, wait a moment and then brush. Perfect for between washes and emergencies.

It sprays a fine powder that absorbs the grease immediately and leaves hair feeling soft, clean and completely degreased.

And it’s great for curly-haired girls like me. I spend ages straightening my hair and usually wet hair products ruin my straightening. But since this is a dry product I can spray it any time and my hair will remain straight.

I use it on just my fringe, or all my hair depending. And I love it. I bought the one with the tropical fragrance and it smells devine.

You can by it from Radius Pharmacy and probably others. It’s about $20 for a big can, but if you want to try it before investing in the big can, a mini-can only costs $9 and is the perfect size for handbags.

I love this stuff, it works really well. If it’s currently in stock, I suggest buying up large – supply seems to be a bit erratic (I’ve been trying to get some for the last 6 months or so). I’m off to Radius tomorrow – thanks for the tip!

Synchonicity. I went to the Unichem pharmacy at the top end of Lambton Quay today to pick up a prescription and lo! they had a whole shelf of the stuff – only $15 for the big cans, and the small ones on special for $8. Hurry on down!!

A cheaper natural option – cornstarch or baby powder. Does exactly the same thing! Just dab a little on your roots, then comb it through. If you look on YouTube, there are tons of these tutorials..

I’ve used talcum powder before – unfortunately it’s really not as good as the dry shampoo. Much harder to apply and brush out, and always leave a noticeable residue on my dark hair (I look a little c18th, powdered wigs and all!). The dry shampoo definitely delivers superior results in my experience.

Thanks for the review! I just got a fringe cut (after years of not having one) and I’m so frustrated with how often I’m needing to wash my hair. I’m off out to get some of this today. yay

Magic! This stuff is tremendous! Took me a while to get over the psychological weirdness of not actually washing my hair every morning and I will try a different scent next time (original is a little like fly spray!) but I’m definitely a convert. A wee bit life changing really.

Just saw that you can buy the full range at Kirkcaldie & Stains in Welly, and guessing other department stores in other cities. Kirk’s was a bit cheaper than the pharmacy I got mine from too.

Dee just bought some… made me try it on my greasy unwashed mop. Holy crap!!!! Totally works. Freaky. I still need a shower but it’s nice to know the hair has options.
