I have so many pairs of black tights – footless, fishnet, patterned, opaque, etc. I’ve always loved black tights. Until recently, when I realised that black tights actually look awful a lot of the time.
Don’t get me wrong. I definitely think black tights can look good. But I think the problem is the overuse and abuse of them. Next time, I’m gonna buy some flesh-tone pantihose or some coloured leggings instead.
To prove my own theory to myself, I googled ‘who wore it better’ to get the pics below. I reckon the bare-legged ladies look way better in the same outfits than the black tight babes. Am I right? or am I right.

I agree with the bare legs in all cases here, except (and I am loathe to say it) I think that Gwyneth looks better in that frock than Julianne Moore. Only bc of the jacket tho! it balances out the black tights perhaps.
I have seen flesh-toned fishnets looking quite cool as a retro alternative too…
I completely agree that Gwyneth’s outfit looks better. And yeah, I think it is the black jacket making everything look a little more tied together.
I just have to say that I HATE the look of flesh coloured tights. I agree that black opaques are not always appropriate (as in, with that black sundressy thing above) but I don’t think that flesh coloured tights are ever MORE appropriate.
Also, that blue dress looks awesome with opaque tights, heaps more edgy than in the other shot. I like edgy
I’m with Ginger in hating flesh-coloured tights, but I love me bright opaques from We Love Colors (and I’m sure other places if you’re not a fatty and can actually buy them locally).
I have many pairs of black leggings though which I wear with ass-kicking boots. They keep me warm, they prevent chub rub and also because I am so tall, they keep me decent. I’d prefer not to have to wear them though a lot of the time.
And if you wanna celebrate brightly coloured tights, here’s a good way to start!
I’m with you on this – I love my black opaques but only with certain outfits. Desite what the fashion mags would have us believe they just don’t work with soft summery dresses. Boots and heavier skirts all the way.
I should also point out that I saw someone at work the other day wearing a flowery summer dress, black opaques and doc boots. So we’re in 1995 again, no?
I LOVE 1995. My mum wouldn’t let me have doc boots so I need to rock those bad boys now.
