Karen Murrell moisturisers

December 22nd, 2009

Remember when we shared our first impressions of Karen Murrell’s beautiful range of natural skin care? Well I’ve had a bit of time using the Face Moisturiser, and the manly-man I live with used the Men’s Face Cream.

The three things I look for in a moisturiser are: texture on application; compatibility with makeup; and how it leaves my skin feeling. This moisturiser ticks all these boxes. It feels very fresh and smooth to apply, doesn’t cake or feel greasy. It was fine under make-up. And feels like it soaks straight into skin and leaves it soft and fresh feeling.

The fragrance may not be to everyone’s liking as it is quite unusual, with grape seed and frankincense. But I liked it a lot.

And the downside is it’s not spf labelled so unknown sun protection. This isn’t a big deal for me because I have a very good facial sunblock, and my foundation is quite high spf. And sometimes the sun protecting ingredients compromise the other benefits of products. But I know some of you will demand an spf label, which is fair enough.

The men’s face cream was apparently great too. Men do have different skin to women – they produce more collagen so fewer fine lines, but usually shave a lot so need moisture to counter dry skin from shaving. This product purports to calm skin after shaving. My partner has very sensitive skin, and he had no problems or flare ups using this product.

As well as being environmentally sound products and packaging, the Karen Murrell moisturisers are great moisturisers. Such a treat to use.

How revealing: Secret Santas

December 21st, 2009

So, we did our swapsies, right? What’d we all get?

My secret santa sent me lovely-smelling Aromatherapy Company cocoa & vanilla hand cream, and a pohutakawa bath bomb which I look forward to using. She also sent me a pile of chocolate balls that I devoured very quickly. Thanks Cat!

So spill the beans here, everyone else.

Martini & Manicure

December 21st, 2009

Last Tuesday me and Jo went along to Hope Brothers on Dixon Street, Welly, for their free manicure with any martini. What a great concept! It’s a fantastic collaboration between Hope and Hevan Beauty.

Me and Jo arrived at Hope after work and ordered a couple of martinis, as we usually do. Only this time we got to have our nails done and chat to two lovely manicurists.

One of these ladies was Hannah Evans-Scott, owner of Hevan. She’s into organising these kinds of events mixing fun and pampering. She’s one of those lovely-and-at-the-same-time-inspiring women obviously doing what she loves.

The manicures themselves were very good – gentle and professional. Starting with a nice hand massage with almond oil, then file and buff, and then polish. You can choose what you want at each of these steps. And men are welcome to enjoy one too.

I think these are regular evenings at Hope over summer (though I can’t find any evidence on the internet). And I thoroughly recommend! Tip: if you’re not au fait with martinis try a chocolate martini to begin with, and the you can move onto a dry or dirty or whatever takes your fancy…

Lady Gaga Bad Romance tutorial

December 20th, 2009

Pursebuzz is the best. Here’s her tutorial on how to do a Lady Gaga look based on Lady’s Bad Romance Vid. Keep watching right through to the airbrush bit – I’ve never seen anyone use one of those gizmos. And applying lipstick with an angle brush – genius!

Part 1 of the Bio-Oil Experiment

December 16th, 2009

The wonderful Julie has been experimenting on herself, and she’s going to be regularly sharing her results with us….

Someone told me the other day that scars mean you’ve had an interesting life.  And certainly the scars on my right hand did come about in a slightly interesting fashion, involving an altercation with the Basement Cat from Hell.  After a suitable period of being annoyed about my immobile hand, I’ve decided to see this as an opportunity instead;  glass half full and all that.

So I’m going to use my twin scars, conveniently placed close enough to fit in one photo frame, to test Bio Oil.

For those not familiar with Bio Oil, it claims to be:
“…a specialist skincare product that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone. Its advanced formulation, which contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, also makes it highly effective for numerous other skin concerns, including aging skin and dehydrated skin.”

Certainly the women on their advertising (I’m yet to see a man feature) appear to swear by it.  My half-hearted attempts to use it on other scars in the past have not made any discernible difference that I could see, but this is a chance to test it properly.

Here are the scars in question, while in my hand is a box of Bio Oil:

Winners of the Durvillea Wine

December 14th, 2009

We loved all your fantastic outfits that you created inspired by seaweed, but of course, there can only be one winner. Or rather, in this case, four. Here’s Meg‘s verdict (and wow, we’re really glad that we didn’t have to choose!):

All the girls ranked their top three and then I assigned them points. The winner was Megan, and the three runners-up ere the first Katie (with the clam purse), Sue, and Nenuphars. We really liked the seaweedy hairstyle in Katie’s entry but the dress Megan picked was just perfect. I thought it was cute that Nenuphar’s included a bike – Jane has one not dissimilar – but hers is pink. We also liked that Sue and Nenupahrs include sensible but glamorous hats for the Marlborough summer.

Thank you all so much for your beautiful entries, and especial thanks to the very quaffable Durvillea Wines for supplying us with such lovely prizes to give away. We’re raising a glass in your direction, and will be making a special trip out to Thorndon New World so we can stock up and drink you all summer long!
