The wonderful Julie has been experimenting on herself, and she’s going to be regularly sharing her results with us….
Someone told me the other day that scars mean you’ve had an interesting life. And certainly the scars on my right hand did come about in a slightly interesting fashion, involving an altercation with the Basement Cat from Hell. After a suitable period of being annoyed about my immobile hand, I’ve decided to see this as an opportunity instead; glass half full and all that.
So I’m going to use my twin scars, conveniently placed close enough to fit in one photo frame, to test Bio Oil.
For those not familiar with Bio Oil, it claims to be:
“…a specialist skincare product that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone. Its advanced formulation, which contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, also makes it highly effective for numerous other skin concerns, including aging skin and dehydrated skin.”
Certainly the women on their advertising (I’m yet to see a man feature) appear to swear by it. My half-hearted attempts to use it on other scars in the past have not made any discernible difference that I could see, but this is a chance to test it properly.
Here are the scars in question, while in my hand is a box of Bio Oil:

(Click here to read more)You can see the scars are pretty much identical. As it’s a lot easier to see them when my hand is tight like that, that’s how I’ll be taking the photos. Not the prettiest of shots, but that’s not the point. For the last ten days I’ve been rubbing Bio Oil into the left scar every morning. Otherwise both scars have been treated identically (eg when I bother with hand cream or sun screen I do my whole hand).
Here’s a pic taken this morning, at the 10 day mark:

Now whilst writing this post, I’ve discovered that I haven’t entirely been following the instructions that Bio Oil gives out for treatment of scars on their website:
“Bio-Oil should be massaged in a circular motion into the scar and surrounding skin, twice daily, for a minimum of 3 months. Younger scars have a greater chance of improvement within a shorter time period, however, older scars will also benefit from the regular use of Bio-Oil. On new scars, Bio-Oil should be applied only once the wound has healed, and should never be used on broken skin.”
Thus from today I’ll be increasing the frequency of application from once daily to twice daily. I hope to keep this up for three months at least, and will send photos in to Pretty Pretty Pretty periodically to show the progress, if any.
The thing to keep in mind about Bio-Oil is that its main ingredient is mineral oil aka liquid paraffin – a petroleum by-product.
That might sound a little scary, but mineral oil is used in Baby Oil and plenty of other cosmetics. The main problem is that for some people, mineral oil can act as a comedogen – i.e. it can block pores, causing zits.
I won’t go into peak oil…
I’ve never tried Bio-Oil on scars, but I’ve found it helps stretch marks fade much more quickly than they would naturally (new and purple to silvery skin-toned in a few months). I’m sure the results vary from person to person, but I’m happy with it!
So now quite so “bio” then I guess Robyn? I feel kind of dirty now!
Annette, I’ve tried Bio-Oil in the past on stretch marks and not noticed any change at all. But I’ve never done it as per the instructions and actually taken pics to see. I’d really like it if this works (especially as these scars look like some kind of weird misplaced stigmata). Time will tell!
Oh dear, for “now quite” kindly read “not quite”! sorry about that.
Hi Julie –
Thanks for doing this, I’ve often wondered but as I have quite a lot of scarring I’d much rather wait to see if it actually works before bothering with the drama and hassle it would require to do it myself!
Might I ask how old your scars are?
Thanks
Lou
I had terrible eczema (on my face, yay) about five years ago. After I took all the awful drugs and rubbed steroid creams into my face, I was super-glad to get adult onset acne (luckily not too badly). My dermatologist suggested I use Bio Oil to treat my wee bit of scarring and it was pretty good. It is really rich though and I can definitely imagine that it would cause break outs on certain skin types…
Hi Lou, the scars are about 2 months old, you can read the story of how I got them here:

The Bio Oil website reckons that the younger the scars the better results you get.
Ugh, feral cat story = hideous!!! Keep a very strong water pistol loaded by your back door – even feral cats hate water.
Just to let you know I’ve been keeping on keeping on with applying the bio oil but only just got around to taking another shot. Hope to have an update post to Amy and Jo in the next couple of days
Also, had the pleasure of water pistolling the feral cat just two nights ago!
Nice one! It’s funny how cats and witches are foiled by harmless water, mwahaha. And candy floss for that matter.
This is a great site, I love the theme you are using. I Stumbled it for you and bookmarked it on Digg.
There’s an update to this now:
