Review: Nature’s Essence Body Scrub by Karen Murrell

January 30th, 2010

Karen Murrell sent Jo and me her range of very natural and naturally nice skin care products to try. We’ve already talked about how wonderful the range is. I’ve been using the body scrub (called Nature’s Essence)  a fair bit lately. In summer, I tend to shave my legs a heck of a lot more than in winter. And so my legs get itchy and I risk in-grown hairs. But I find scrubbing or exfoliating helps a lot. At the same time, I don’t like scrubbing too much either, because it can be very drying.

So I’m very pleased that Nature’s Essence is very gentle. You can however opt for a stronger scrub by applying it to dry skin. It actually leaves a moist-feeling residue…maybe residue isn’t the correct word…but it certainly leaves skin feeling soft and nourished.

Nature’s Essence uses salt flakes for the scrub effect. This is interesting, because rather than being dehydrating (which is what I associate salt with) salt is used heaps in scrubs and baths to soften and heal skin.

Anyway, this product is another winner from Karen Murrell. And if you keep up with prettyprettypretty regularly, watch out for an upcoming giveaway of the scrub.

In the meantime, Karen Murrell is available from Farmers, and also from another prettyprettypretty fave – GracieLou.co.nz.

Note: We aren’t affiliated with Karen Murrell in any way. We just like her products and approach to skin care!

Mascara wars: Revlon vs Lancome

January 27th, 2010

We’ve been comparing mascaras for a while now, and the current winningest mascara is Lancome Virtuose. Check out all the results of past mascara wars on our Winningest products page.

This time we have another marvelous guest reviewer – Lisa (of Ratpony fame). Based on our previous reviews, she bought Lancome Virtuose to pit against her usual Revlon mascara. Here’s Lisa’s story and pretty peepers:

I put the old revlon on one eye and the new lancome on the other. I even gave revlon a fighting chance by putting the lancome on the eye that was already feeling like it might cry a little because when I was curling my lashes my finger slipped and it twisted and ripped out a few lashes (argh.. not a pleasant feeling). Plus no idea what the red mark on my eye is.

Anyway, I put the mascaras on and then did some housework (trying to recreate the feeling of utter hopelessness and despair that a poorly air conditioned office achieves) and then watched a movie. The results are pictured left.

The Revlon Fabulash – went on a bit clumpy… ended up sitting in the creases under my eye (creases ooooor wrinkles…). Multiple this by 10 and you have my eye at midday in the office.

And then…

Introducing the Lancôme Virtuôse… Well, I think the difference speaks for itself.

So, two very enthusiastic thumbs up for the prettyprettypretty recommendation. No more crappy Revlon mascara for me!

How to spot a fake

January 21st, 2010

I have been bidding and buying cosmetics on trademe recently. Seems like a lot of people have unwanted pressies on there at the mo. I’ll review my latest purchases some time soon. But I am always always always suspicious of auctions for new  and cheap luxury brands.

You can imagine why this is a prob. If it’s not the real product, then what the hell is it? And the thought of some fraudster making a mint out of innocent bidders is infuriating.

But how can you tell? If you’re suspicious of a product you’ve purchased, take it  into your local cosmetic counter. I asked a MAC artist at the counter about spotting fakes. She had a couple of stories of people coming in with products that (to her) were obvious fakes.

You can also do a bit of homework before you bid. Study the picture, compare to images of the real product online, and google the product for tips on how to spot common fakes.

Here, here and here are just a few sites with helpful tips on MAC products.

Now I don’t mean to scare-monger, because I have bought some pretty good deals on trademe. But caveat emptor my pretties!

Do you drive in heels?

January 17th, 2010

I don’t. I always take off heels (and jandals) because I’m a nervous nelly behind the wheel. I’m dead-scared something is gonna get caught or slip down there. I’m a bit compulsive about it. But to be honest I never really thought about whether it is in fact more dangerous to wear heels than bare feet or other kinds of shoes.

There’s an interesting article in the motoring section of stuff.co.nz right now. Some car companies are now tailoring pedals to accommodate all types of shoes. I’ll bear this in mind when I next go car shopping. (My household doesn’t have a car at the mo. We’re trying to see how long we can last without one. I reckon by the middle of winter the bus stop will seem far too far away. But we’ll see…)

So do you ever/sometimes/never drive in heels?

IMG_0415On a vaguely related note, I saw these beautiful Vivienne Westwood heels in Smith & Caughey’s. They are made out of a rubbery plastic that reminds me of Barbie shoes.

While it’s annoying when companies exploit our fondness for childhood toys, these shoes look like a sincere homage.  I’d drive in these! Because I’d never take them off if I owned a pair.

Review: 4 Season Nails

January 13th, 2010

For Xmas, my mother gave me a pedicure voucher, which was a lovely present. It was for a place in Johnsonville Mall, which is less lovely, but luckily that’s on the way to Lisa’s house.

Of course, for presents, you’re not supposed to know how much they cost, but I can tell you anyway that the pedicures at 4 Season Nails cost $45. Do I recommend them for your pedicure needs? No, I really don’t. The place is your standard mall nail bar, with manicure counters and some throne chairs with footbaths, and it reeks of chemicals. So far, so typical, and that’s fine, it’s not a place you’d spend forever in, unless you work there. But they also have a large flatscreen TV that was showing Honey on a loop, which would have been distracting enough for people who want to concentrate on their magazines (a couple of months out of date at that), but the girl who was working on my feet kept watching the screen instead of what she was doing, and given that she was attacking my cuticles with sharp metal things and I was crying out in pain, she really should have been paying more attention before she actually cut me and I yelped and started bleeding. Not cool. It was the most painful treatment I’ve ever had – the filing was really rough, she didn’t actually cut my nails (they were really long), just the skin around them, and the (threadbare) towel fell off the footrest so my feet were slipping around everywhere. The topcoat she used on the OPI polish must have been good cos my toes aren’t chipped two weeks later, but seriously, what was supposed to be a relaxing experience turned out to be all kinds of torture instead. It may have been the particular technician and not the place that sucked, but given that I didn’t get her name, I can’t tell you who to avoid, so I suggest just skipping the place altogether.

The Princess’s Bedroom

January 12th, 2010

Have you Wellingtonians seen this super-cute shop that popped up before xmas on Ghuznee Street? If not, it’s well worth a visit.

The Princess's Bedroom on Ghuznee Street

It’s a little caravan filled with all sorts of inexpensive treats like jewellery, hair accessories, clothes and toys. I hope it’s doing well in its little spot on Ghuznee, because I want to visit it again and again. (The only thing I think it needs is a cat that lives in it.)

Mascara wars: ModelCo vs Lancome

January 10th, 2010

We’ve recently collated the results of our mascara reviews into our Winningest Products page. In my latest review I test ModelCo mascara against Lancome Virtuose.

Lancome Virtuose is a really great mascara. We’ve reviewed it against many other mascaras over the years, and it always comes out on top. It’s clump free, has a great curved wand which is perfect for upper AND lower lashes, and lengthens and curls. Brilliant.

But the difficulty with this review is that the challenger – ModelCo – is really good too.

It got a free ModelCo mascara (with a cute little mirror stuck to it) with a magazine. The magazine was crap but the mascara was well worth it. You might be able to see in the photo that it is slightly less black than the Virtuose and probably doesn’t fatten lashes as much. But it is also clump free, separates lashes, lengthens, doesn’t smudge through out the day, and looks very natural.

So I gotta make this battle a tie!
