In the Kitchen: Vitamin C Serum

April 30th, 2010

Yesterday I donned my Pretty Pretty Pretty lab coat and ventured in to the kitchen to make a batch of vitamin C serum.

I’d seen mention of a home-made version of this serum at a number of places around the internet, and eventually settled on the very simple recipe I found on this natural skincare site (where you can read more on vitamin C in skincare):

  • 5ml water
  • 1/4 tsp ascorbic acid powder
  • 5ml glycerin

After a bit of a wander around various supermarkets and heath food shops in the Hutt, I eventually found the ascorbic acid powder at Commonsense Organics at $20 for a 125g bag. More than I wanted to spend, but at a quarter of a teaspoon per batch it will go a long way (and if it all goes horribly wrong I can take it orally for some extra winter vitamin C). The glycerin I bought from the supermarket for $3.

I first dissolved the ascorbic acid powder in the water in an old amber glass dropper bottle–light degrades vitamin C so clear glass is not suitable for this. It was slow to dissolve so I left it for about an hour–stopping by for the occasional shake–until all the crystals had disappeared. Then I added the glycerin and put it into the fridge.

Come night time I washed my face as usual, put a few drops of the serum onto the palm of my hand, rubbed my hands together to disperse it and then applied it to my face and the backs of my hands. As the mixture is acidic I found it stung a little around my nostrils which are slightly raw at the moment, but other than that I had no reaction (bearing in mind that my skin isn’t sensitive–think more along the lines of the arse-end of a rhino).

I went to bed and all was well and good until I woke up at 3am to the distinctive smell of fake tan. It was coming from the palms of my hands. I didn’t notice any smell from the backs of my hands where I had applied the serum and from what I could tell my face was fine too.

I dozed back off, slightly weirded out, but it wasn’t until about 6am I suddenly connected the smell of fake tan with the possibility of actually being fake tanned. Looking at my palms (after a good wash and a scrub) I think there is definitely some colour visible along the crease lines.

Poor quality photo:

Thankfully my face seems to be its usual pale self. But what happened?

The brief reading I have done online tells me that dihydroxyacetone (DHA)–the component of fake tan that is responsible for turning skin brown and the characteristic smell–is derived via microbial fermentation from glycerol a.k.a. glycerin.

So do I have freaky palms that emit some strange microbial sweat brew in the night? Was my glycerin, ascorbic acid powder, water, or dropper bottle contaminated? I don’t know enough chemistry to know if these are possibilities, but I’m pretty excited to perform round 2 of the experiment tonight to see if I get the same results again!

And I’ll let you know what–if any–effect the vitamin c serum has on my face too.

Nice To Meet You All

April 22nd, 2010

I used to hate photos of myself- too many chins, blotchy skin, off-white teeth.
It has taken me a long while to come to grips with it but now I love taking self
portraits and capturing the moment (with me in it even!).

That is part of the reason why I love PPP, because it is so representative of
real woman (which may be a cliched term), but it sums it up for me. PPP is
also not afraid to tell things as they are period, blood, vaginas- none of the
airy, fairy vague references to the ‘monthly cycle’.

I have so many exciting and pretty things to tell you about in the future, but a
little bit about me first; I’m Morgan, I’m 24, I love all things sparkly, I have
an insatiable (but newfound) addiction to nail polish and my first word was
‘shoes’- if only I didn’t have stupidly big feet that addiction would be strong
too.

I’m In!

April 22nd, 2010

When I read Jo’s post this morning asking if anyone was interested in writing for Pretty Pretty Pretty I damn near wet my pants in excitement. I’ll miss Amy’s contributions, but who could resist the chance to become a beauty sidekick to the divine Miss Hubris?

After tripping over myself in my haste to get to my email program, I sent off my credentials–

Jo,

Every serious beauty blog needs a Hutt Valley correspondent and here I am, just sitting in a flat in Naenae, the answer to your prayers.

My credentials:

1. While eye shadow blending may not be my forte and the phrase “crease colour” causes me to break out in a cold sweat, nobody knows more about the outlet style cosmetic offerings of Postie Plus than I do. Queen Helene Mint Julep mask? Two shades of Rimmel eye shadow? An ancient Revlon mascara? An eclectic offering of Boots skincare products? Check, check, check, and check.

2. All the women in my family begin to go grey in their early twenties. Hairdresser boyfriend thought my colour was natural when we first met. Yes, I know more about home hair colour than my grandma knew about shortbread.

3. My hair is curly. Something something conditioner.

4. I’m a complete skeptic. I laugh in the face of botonanopeptimide complexes. Four years of science education at that great bastion of learning known as Massey University have left me prepared to sort the 79% of women who felt their skin tone had improved from the 83% who thought their skin felt more supple.

5. I’m at the mercy of bus timetables. I can often be found in the vicinity of a cosmetic counter testing products as I wait for the next incarnation of the 121 VALLEY HEIGHTS. I know my Color Sensational lipstick from my ColorBurst.

6. I’m poor and curious: aka always whipping up weird shit in the kitchen to slap on my face.

7. My obsession with colour has made the leap from skulking about paint shops looking at test pots to skulking about nail polish displays looking at nail colour. Also, as above, whipping up weird shit by mixing up new colours.

8. And–to close the deal–my grandfather was once the editor of The North Otago Daily Times. Beauty journalism runs in my veins.

Sarah

Loathe as I am to accuse anyone of low standards, that totally did the trick. I’m in!

Are you pretty pretty pretty?

April 22nd, 2010

You might have noticed that things have gone a bit quiet around here, with good reason. Amy has decided to focus her attentions elsewhere, so she’ll no longer be writing for PPP. I’ll miss her a great deal and wish her all the best.

So what becomes of the site we started together? I think it’s come a long way in the past couple of years, and it’s something I’m really proud of, so I don’t want the site to die. What I’ve always loved about PPP is that it’s a team effort, so now I’m looking for a couple more writers to join me. Do you have a love of pretty things, combined with a sense of realism? Can you appreciate beauty products while disapproving of aspects of the beauty industry? Do you want to write about stuff because you love to share and not just because occasionally you may get free products out of it? Send me an email, let’s have a chat – joanna (a) prettyprettypretty.com.

Thank you!

Wild about Wildilocks

April 11th, 2010

There’s a new hair salon in town, and it’s rather special. Wildilocks is from Australia originally, but now they’ve opened up a branch at 225 Cuba Street (where Eyeball Kicks used to be – don’t worry, Eyeball Kicks is still around). As well as being a salon, Wildilocks also sells clothes, accessories and hair products. As you can see from the listings on their webstore, they’ve got a particular focus on the gothy-ravey-steam punky aesthetic, so if you’re after oversize goggles or Special FX hair dye, this is the place you want to go.

I’m particularly intrigued by their pricing structure – you pay per hour (billed in quarter hour increments), with stylists ranging from $55 to $85, depending on their expertise. Another awesome service they offer? Vintage hair dos! I was lucky enough to get to model for them as Dom and Charlotte were trained by Kat from Australia, and the Victory Rolls I got were seriously awesome. Photos are after the jump.

Doctor Who? Balls!

April 6th, 2010

Remember how I went to a Pride & Prejudice & Zombies ball at Halloween? The wonderful Wellington Historical Costume Society who organised that are throwing another ball this Saturday the 10th, called Have Tardis, Will Travel, and you should come along!

The boundaries of time and relative dimensions in space are open for the next WHCS event, a Dr Who themed time-travelling ball: Have Tardis Will Travel.

Bid farewell to the current Dr Who, dance, eat delicious treats and generally have lots and lots of fun

Saturday, April 10, 2010
St Michael’s Church Hall, Upland Road, Kelburn
6.30 – late

Attire: Dress in clothing from any of the different eras that Dr Who has visited or as a Dr Who character. Steampunk attire is also appropriate.

For those of you who, like me, are not really that familiar with where and when the Doctor has visited, they’ve made a list of eras for inspiration as well:

  • Ancient Pompeii,
  • 18th century aristocratic France (The Girl in the Fireplace)
  • 1745 Scotland (The Highlander)
  • Mid-Victorian England
  • 1920s UK (Black Orchid)
  • Steampunk (Voyage of the Damned)

This still doesn’t mean that I have any idea what I’m going to wear though! Help! Keep in mind that I’m poor, I’m fat, and there will be a lot of dancing. Will you come to the ball? I’ll save a space on my dance card for you!

Fizz!

April 5th, 2010

fizz makeupRecently* we were contacted by Yasmine Allen, a makeup artist from Taupo who has created her own line of colours for eyes called Fizz. Fizz is pigment-based, free of talc and parabens, and so as a lover of bright colours, I was super keen to get my hands on some to try.

Yasmine kindly sent me down a range of samples in yellow (Aunt Daisy), purple (Purple Rain), green (Tiki), pink (Smooch), orange and blue (there are now four more colours). The picture to the right is from her awesome collection of photos to demonstrate FIZZ, but after the jump, I have a go with it myself…
