A dollop of awesome

December 27th, 2008

(This guest post is courtesy of PPP P.A.G Hadyn)

When the lovely Miss Amy and Miss Joanna gave me the brand new Dollop pomade I was skeptical. After all, I am a Dapper Dan man and have been for years. But, friends, I can tell you I have changed my tune.

Dollop’s pomade is, like any pomade, greasy to the touch and is perfect for creating those beautiful Donald Draper hairstyles that all the ladies like these days.

Hadyn or Murray or Don?

Hadyn or Murray or Don?

What sets Dollop apart is the wonderful smell. Dollop’s spicy ginger fragrance is incredibly nice and is a nice change from the usual chemically smells of other men’s hair products. And best of all it’s all natural ingredients.

The texture of Dollop pomade may put some guys (and girls) off. It is a greasy oily and can give your hair a dirty feel. But don’t worry, it softens during the day and feels like “normal” after an hour or two.

Also the clever both-ways-up Dollop logo means I always know what I’m reaching for (no matter my state in the morning).

(And as a person with long hair who usually doesn’t do very much to it, I think a tiny little bit of Dollop rubbed through makes a really nice light setting product, but Hadyn stole the stuff away before I had a proper chance to experiment with it)

Mighty party Jo!

December 11th, 2008

Tasty tasty cocktail makingJo’s South Pacific party last Saturday was fantastic! Sun, bbq, cocktails, snacks… oh, and a tiki shack!

I went in Pearl Harbour garb (1940s-esq). I got the idea for my hair from pursebuzz (of course) See her video below..

Mad Men-inspired hair

November 9th, 2008

Jo went to a ‘Mad Men‘ election party last night and I was privileged to do her hair and make-up. She wanted a Joan Holloway look, so I searched youtube for how to do foxy ’60s.

There wasn’t a lot on youtube, and as usual the best advice is on pursey.

So I went with an up front pouf (here’s my vid on how-to) and chignon at the back (here’s my vid on how-to). Hope you liked it Jo!

And I found these interesting videos on an official Mad Men site about the hair and make-up on the show.

Review: Clinique Hi Def Lashes

October 27th, 2008

I have used the Clinique High Definition Lashes mascara for a wee while now, having received as a gift with purchase. The wand is half brush, half comb – the idea being that you brush through the mascara with the brush and then comb out any clumps or bunching. I found that the comb actually clumpifies though.

In the pictures below, I have benchmarked the Clinique (see left) against a previous winner of a mascara challenge – the Lancome Vitruose (see right). I recommend both for every day wear. The Clinique made my lashes look fuller and curlier, but those benefits are slightly offset by it also being messier and clumpier. It does last well through the day, with minimal smudging.

The dual brush/comb gives more choice on how your lashes can look. Using the brush alone works quite well for a subtle look, and the comb makes lashes much fuller and darker. The end of the wand is tapered nicely too so that you can easily get the tricky little lashes in the inner corner of your eye.

It may not be perfect but I’ll use it again, and maybe purchase it if I see it on sale.

You can also check out many other reviews of this mascara here.

Win a Herbatint prize!

October 6th, 2008

Herbatint

THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED.

We’ve another prize to give away! This time you could win one of five fabulous Herbatint permanent hair colourants.

You might remember the glowing review I gave Herbatint a while back. Well, we managed to track down some Herbatint to give away to you.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling us your hair colour preference (we have dark chestnut, light golden blonde, dark blonde, and blonde to give away) AND a good/bad hair story.

As an example, here’s my real life hair-horror story (which is also part of the reason don’t like hardcore, chemically hair products). A few years ago, I had my hair chemically straightened with a product called Glatt. The product wasn’t applied quite right, and in the days that followed the treatment, my hair snapped off at the roots leave patches a bare scalp. Though the hairdresser (Cut Above on Lorne St, Auckland) gave me some free moisture treatments to remedy the effect, they never gave my money back for the treatment. Afterwards I spoke to many hairdressers about Glatt, and many had similar stories about it. It’s not a nice product.

So leave us your colour preference, and good/bad hair story. Five winners will be chosen randomly (but sorted by colour preference first as we only have one of each colour and we wouldn’t want to send you a prize you can’t use.)

Winners will be drawn Wednesday 15th October 2008.

How does she do it: Megan Wegan

October 6th, 2008

Here is my friend Megan – she’s just had her hair cut and it looks beautiful. Such a brave move and such a payoff! (Hope you don’t mind me stealing your photo, Megan??)

As a fellow curly-haired girl, I understand the trepidation in going short. You’re lucky to have found an understanding stylist.

Megan also has some great tips for false eyelashes too. Click her to read more

Review: Herbatint hair colour

August 25th, 2008

Herbavita’s Herbatint is one of the few ‘natural’ hair colourant brands I’ve seen. And I reckon it’s all good. It gets a big pretty thumbs-up from me.

They say:
A herbal based permanent hair colour with aloe vera, no paraben, NO AMMONIA and only 3% peroxide. Herbatint has fewer chemicals in than other permanent hair colours on the market and unlike products which contain ammonia it has no smell once mixed. The absence of ammonia results in little or no penetration of the epidermis and is less likely for people to have allergic reactions.

The Good:

Easy application, you apply to dry, non-washed hair, mix two bottles, spread through hair, wait, and rinse out. No strong smells. Covers grey (don’t ask how I know). It was quite a clean application – the mixture doesn’t splash much and it seems to cling to your hair so doesn’t drip from your hair. And I don’t think it stains the bathroom like other dyes – the couple of drops that did fall wiped off the floor easily even after many minutes.

A few washes later, and my hair is still super shiny and soft feeling.

The Bad: It takes 40 mins to develop colour, but actually I didn’t mind it taking this long at all.

Costs: around $30 from Hardy’s natural health stores.

Oh, and remember to do a patch test first – there’ll be no anaphylactic shock on my watch!!

Dud Trades: One woman’s FAIL = another woman’s FTW

May 1st, 2008

Vo5So, we’re all different people, right? And we all have different hair, different skin, different tastes and so on and so forth. Therefore, a product I might like is something you might hate, and a product I hate might be something that you’d love. With that in mind, I’d like to start up a Dud Trades series off PrettyPrettyPretty. First up, I have an almost full bottle of Vo5 shampoo ‘fade defy’ and its matching conditioner.

formulated to strengthen protect and promote a radiant shine promoting your hairs vitality. contains vitamins a, e and provitamin b5 which are released as your hair dreis when you need it most.

$4.89 each, thanks Woolworths online!
I don’t like them because they make my hair dull and limp, but other reviews on the internet offer it some praise, so perhaps it’s right for you. So would you like my shampoo and conditioner? You can have them for free if you pick them up from me, or I’ll send them to you if you send me some dud product you have.
