A while ago at Make Up/Over Monday, we decided that we’d set ourselves the challenge of looking different. What this translated to was that Rachel who normally doesn’t wear much makeup at all got the full on loads of bright eyeshadow ala me, and since I normally do my makeup very loose and smudgey, Amy applied mine neat and straight out of Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin, in the style of “Temptress”, modeled on Barbara Streisand. It was a learning experience for everyone involved!

The results and revelations after the jump.

Making it on Make Up/Over Monday

Filed under: MakeMonday, body products — johubris @ 9:24 pm

This past Monday, Amy and I decided to put our money where our mouths are, sort of. We can sit here and write about products until the cows come home, but who are we to judge if we’re not being judged ourselves? And so, with that in mind, I rounded up an assortment of goodies and headed off to Amy’s house so that we could make some beauty products for ourselves!

First up, we found a recipe for bath bombs online and decided to make super moisturising bombs. We were a little limited in that Newtown New World didn’t have any citric acid, so we had to make do with one container of it. So, for our first batch, we mixed together a third of a cup of citric acid, a third of a cup of milk powder, and a third of a cup of baking soda. This had to be mixed and mixed and mixed until there were no more lumps. Then we added in a teaspoon of grapeseed oil, a drop of food colouring, a teaspoon (actually way more, by accident) of Rose Water (from the Med. Warehouse - good in cocktails too!) and spritzes of water until it started bubbling. In fact, it bubbled far too much. We decided to use ice trays as moulds, but it kept bubbling up and up until eventually we decided to roll the cubes into balls and put them in muffin trays instead. And then they kept on rising. I’m sure they’ll be great in the bath though, even though they don’t look so pretty.

We made our second batch with almond oil, no food colouring and some mango tea leaves for scenting. These ones were far far dryer, and so we packed them into muffin paper cases. I think we need to find a balance between the two levels of moistness!

After we were done experimenting with bath bombs, we moved to my brilliant Gosh You Scrub Up Nicely Sugar Scrub - just mix sugar with grapeseed or light olive oil, almond oil, and coconut oil if you have it (or a tiny drop of essential oil if you fancy a different scent). This scrub exfoliates and moisturises at the same time, and is magic before shaving your legs, and on elbows and heels. If you don’t have the ingredients to make it, well, you just might get lucky and win some from us…

Manicure Monday April 21, 2008

Filed under: MakeMonday — Amy @ 9:32 pm

So today we tried an at-home French Manicure for Make-up/over Monday. My french manicure kit is just one of those cheapies from the pharmacy. doesn’t last too long but good for cheap thrills.

I watched this instructional vid below from youtube a while back and love the way she does her nails. I got sick of using those little white strips that come with the manicure kit, and much prefer painting on the white bits by hand.

The only tip i can add to the video is use a clear acetone (nail polish remover). the first time i tried this i used an acetone with pink colouring in it, so the white tips i painted on got smudged with pink.

Oh, and tonight, in keeping with the ultra girlie-ness of the occasion, i did this watching Girls of the Playboy Mansion. If you have Sky you could try that too.

Product review: face masks April 14, 2008

Filed under: MakeMonday, reviews — johubris @ 9:05 am

For our first Make(up/over/under) Monday (we aim to get together regularly on Mondays to play with girlie products), we decided to do joint reviews of face masks.

Amy's maskAmy: Totally Juicy Grapefruit Peel-Off Mask
Farmers, 150ml, $10ish

“Amazingly lifts out dirt and impurities to purify pores.”

I had fun with this one - it was cooling and sensual to apply and weird pulling it off. It’s a clear gel that tightens as it dries so you peel it off like sunburned skin. It’s a bit stingy to peel off but it made my skin super-soft feeling - no dry bits. PP/PPP

Jo: Ultra Organics Ginger’n Coriander
Farmers, 30ml, $2.50

“Moisturise and revitalize damaged dry pores effectively with this high quality rise off face mask and re-capture your skins [sic] natural sparkle!”

Jo's masqueThis was tingly when I first put it on, and continued to be a feelable presence, with a little tightening as it dried. It washed off pretty easily in warm water, leaving my face feeling smooth, but for all it moisturisy nourishy claims, I really do feel like I need a separate moisturiser now.

I’d use it again, since I own it now, but I’m glad it’s a small tube, because I don’t intend to marry it or anything. Perhaps I should have gone for the peel-off instead. No P/PPP
