Removing Glitter Polish!

December 28th, 2011

I love a love hate relationship with glitter nail polish- love because I love anything sparkly and hate because it is a pain and a half to take the stuff off.

If you are not as nail obsessed as myself you may not know the super easy but ridiculous looking way to take it off. I thought since everyone she have a bit of bling, bling for their nails on New Years I’d start my long overdue return to PPP with a quick tip to make things easier taking it off.

All you need is your normal nail polish remover (I prefer one with an acetone base it works faster so you don’t have to rub as hard), cotton balls and some tinfoil. All you need to do is soak the cotton ball in the remover as per normal place on your nail then wrap in a strip of foil then scrunch it to make it tight to the nail. Leave it for 5-15 minutes depending on your patience and voila glitter off with minimal effort!

But trust me when I say one hand at a time!  I promise some far more interesting posts in the New Years- but at least I have the ball rolling again!

Tip: Losing That Freshly Dyed Pong

May 6th, 2010

Some hair dyes tend to leave a bit of a stench in their wake (not looking at anyone in particular Clairol Nice ‘N Easy). A simple way to get rid of it is with an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse:

  1. Wash out your hair colour as usual.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of ACV to a large glass of water and pour over your hair. Give it a bit of a smoosh about and then rinse out.
  3. Condition your hair.

Done! ACV makes a great rinse any time for clarifying your hair and leaving it nice and shiny. And as long as you use it after shampooing and before conditioning, you won’t end up smelling like salad dressing.

Review: Dry shampoo. That’s right, dry shampoo!

October 12th, 2009

We’ve had a fair amount of discussion here at ppp on greasy hair and I’ve collected a few great tips. I have a fringe and don’t like washing my hair that often so I now wash my fringe separately (instead of washing my whole head); pin back my bangs over night so my forehead doesn’t grease it up; and have talc at the ready.

batiste tropicalBut life has changed for me somewhat, having discovered Batiste Dry Shampoo. It really is like a shampoo in a can.

The idea is that you spray the can at your hair, just like you would with hairspray, wait a moment and then brush. Perfect for between washes and emergencies.

It sprays a fine powder that absorbs the grease immediately and leaves hair feeling soft, clean and completely degreased.

And it’s great for curly-haired girls like me. I spend ages straightening my hair and usually wet hair products ruin my straightening. But since this is a dry product I can spray it any time and my hair will remain straight.

I use it on just my fringe, or all my hair depending. And I love it. I bought the one with the tropical fragrance and it smells devine.

You can by it from Radius Pharmacy and probably others. It’s about $20 for a big can, but if you want to try it before investing in the big can, a mini-can only costs $9 and is the perfect size for handbags.

The jean genie

June 6th, 2009

If you had three jean-genie wishes what would they be? Probably something like:

  1. I wish my legs looked slimmer/filled-out;
  2. I wish my bum looked buxom/smaller;
  3. I wish my jeans accentuated my curves

These are all really wishes for obtaining the right proportions, aesthetically speaking. Well, Jean Genie says the magic is all in the cut and colour of your jeans.

First tip: Control the appearance of your thighs by choosing either a flat colour (for enlarging spindly legs) or a two toned wash (for slimming). Look at my diagram. Both rectangles are the same dimensions. But the two tone looks slimmer even with the lighter colour.

Second tip: Make your butt look bigger with small pockets, and smaller with big pockets. easy.

Third tip: They’re not always in fashion, but get bootcuts or flares to balance and accentuate curves. Straight cut and skinny jeans will widen the look of hips, because in comparison the legs look way slim. That’s why boots look so good with skinny jeans because it provides the balance toyour figure that bootcuts and flares give.

Those are my tips. Gleaned from years of jean shopping. My fave place to buy jeans in Welly is Hurrican Jeans. There staff are helpful as and knowledgeable and they give student discounts.

Prettify your home with old magazines

May 4th, 2009

Those of you who have been to my house know that I have masses of hallway walls, and when my hallway isn’t crammed full of girls fighting teeth and nail for the best clothes in a clothing swap, it can be a little empty and white and boring, so I decided that I needed some art to cheer it up.

One pile of old Frankie magazines later, I had a bunch of pretty pictures ready to go into some frames I got for $2 each at the Warehouse. Glee! I adore Frankie’s artwork, their posters adorn my bedroom walls. I have a whole bunch of other pictures that I might try making into photoblocks with instructions from Miss Sue.

How does she do it: Megan Wegan

October 6th, 2008

Here is my friend Megan – she’s just had her hair cut and it looks beautiful. Such a brave move and such a payoff! (Hope you don’t mind me stealing your photo, Megan??)

As a fellow curly-haired girl, I understand the trepidation in going short. You’re lucky to have found an understanding stylist.

Megan also has some great tips for false eyelashes too. Click her to read more

Torrid picking the winner for the win!

July 1st, 2008

As a fat chick who likes to wear nice clothes suitable for her age that make her feel sexy instead of dressing like a frumpy grandma, I am all about ordering from Torrid, especially when they’re having a 50% off clearance sale as they are right now (I got a pair of velour track pants (I know, I am so OC housewife, but they look coooomfy), a smocked pink hoodie, a pair of flats with dangling skulls, a short-sleeved jacket, a pair of awesome lime green panties and the cutest denim halterneck dress ever for just $80 US + $43 for shipping), but another reason why I’m giving them mad love today is because I saw that they’re selling Team Barack and Team McCain necklaces. Why do I like it so much? Because anti-women’s-rights old McCain comes in second-place silver, while Barack gets the gold. Huzzah!

Beauty tips from a pretty lady

June 18th, 2008

I love these tips - thanks for the beauty round-up Megan!! (hope you don’t mind me linking to ya!) And you have some smart friends. I’ll have to check out this elizabeth arden 8 hour cream…

And while we’re sharing – I don’t actually cleanse, scrub or tone my skin either. I’ve got a foaming face wash in the shower and other than that it’s just moisturiser. Not that my skin’s great, but i don’t notice the difference from when i used to cleanse, scrub and tone.

But I do use a warm wet flannel (facecloth) on my face every day – that’s the best exfoliant I reckon.  The heat opens the pores and water is the best solvent. Just go easy on the eye area.
