Product wars: Shu Uemura vs Garnier

March 15th, 2010

I bought some sample Shu Uemura cleansing oils off trademe.co.nz recently. Shu is ordinarily a very expensive brand, and elusive in NZ (though you can buy from Kosmakit in Auckland). So I was eager to try this High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil.

This cleansing oil is supposed to cleanse skin and remove waterproof makeup leaving skin fresh and refined. According to beautypedia.com, this product actually contains a skin-irritating menthol derivative that creates only the illusion of freshness.

But is it  a good cleanser? I pitted it against Garnier Clean & Sensitive (which I’ve previously reviewed here) and I don’t think it was nearly as good. It left a lot of mascara residue on my skin and felt even more oily than the Garnier.

So Garnier wins this one. Check out our Winningest Products page for more reviews.

The first row of cotton pads  shows the results of the first swipe of the eye for each product. Both products removed most makeup, but the Shu Uemura left mascara residue on my skin.

Product wars: Garnier vs Lancome

November 11th, 2009

november 003Pictured right is the result of my latest makeup remover test.

I pitted  Garnier Clear Sensitive two-in-one water and oil version (you know, the kinds you have to shake before using) against Lancome’s Bi-facial eye makeup remover.

Take a close look at the pic. The top row of cotton pads are the results of the first swipe. You can see that the Lancome (right) has removed a lot of my foundation too (the peachy colour).

The bottom row of cotton pads are the results of the second swipe. You can see that there was still a lot of black after the first swipe of Garnier that finally come off the on the second swipe.

I’ve reviewed the Garnier before, and I didn’t like it. And I haven’t changed my mind about it after this latest test.

Lancome ftw!

Product wars: Simple vs Garnier

September 14th, 2009

Simple v GarnierYou might recall a while back when I first tried Simple eye make-up remover and reviewed it against a Clarins one.

Well I’ve bought a new make-up remover and wanted to review it benchmarked against Simple.

Pictured left is the Simple and Garnier side by side. The Simple is a watery type of remover and the Garnier is a ’sensitive’ two-in-one water and oil version (you know, the kinds you have to shake before using).

The first removal of eye make-up is pictured in the top row of cotton pads. The Simple removes most make-up in the first wipe, while the Garnier definitely takes two wipes to get all the mascara from my eye.

The Garnier is very oily and smears mascara across the skin as you remove it, so actually needs a second wipe to clean up the mess it makes. And afterward it leaves your skin feeling very oily.

Simple on the other hand quickly and cleanly removes make-up and leaves skin feeling fresh. Simple is the clear winner this time around too.

Unfortunately I ‘m commited to my bottle of Garnier now that I’ve purchased it :-(
