Chapped lips are a pain. And with the southerlies a blowin’ in the captial this time of year, you’d better get used to dry, cracked lips. A good slathering of balm (especially before you go to bed) can soften you up. But if you’re beyond the point when balm can help, and you really want that ruby red lipstick to look its best, then this product will save you. It’s a gentle scrub for your lips that instantly and gently buffs away all the roughness.

I’ve been using the Mary Kay Lip Mask for a while, usually for special occasions (you need to leave it on for a mintue or so, so not an everyday kind of thing, I mean who has a minute to spare every day?). But today my boyfriend was complaining of chapped lips, so I made him try the Lip Mask. He’s not very receptive to me dousing his face in products (ever since a false eyelash incident where I accidentally glued his eyelids shut.) He was pleasantly surprised that the Mask was harmless, and even worked a treat. He is currently sporting satin-smooth lips without the stickiness and shininess of using a balm.

The scrub can take a bit of getting used to. It does feel a bit weird but well worth the results. And it is pricey – NZ$36.50. That’s more than I’d pay for a lip balm, and even a lipstick. But if you’re a lipstick junkie maybe it’s worth it to ensure your fave lippie looks its best on smooth lips.

I had a genuinely awesome time at the Mary Kay party at my place last night. Hope my other guests were as enthused. Karyl Anderson is the most expert make-up and skincare person you can talk to. I learned so much and picked up some great products that I got to thoroughly try and test before purchasing. Plus I got a free Satin Hands gift for being host!

I picked up so many tips from Karyl, and me and Jo gonna share them all over a number of posts.

Here’s the first few tips about buying foundation:

Test foundations by striping possible matches down your jaw-line. The best match is likely to be the one that ‘disappears’ into your skin when you squint at yourself.

Leave tester foundation on your skin for several minutes before deciding on the best colour. Everyone’s skin has its own acid-mantel (or something) that will affect the colour of foundation. So leave it a while to settle.

Thanks Karyl!!

I was raving about the Mary Kay hand treatment we tried out at the last couple of PPP parties. Turns out my friend knows Wellington’s senior sales director of Mary Kay, Karyl Anderson. So my friend jacked up a meeting between me and Jo and the lovely Karyl. Turns out Karyl has led an interesting life and career. She’s such an inspirational lady, we are stoked she responded to our PPP questions…

Karyl’s been with Mary Kay for 19 years and joined when teaching nursing and raising a three year old. She also found Pilates 6 years ago and loved it so much decided to train as an Instructor. Karyl teaches Pilates at Hearts & Bones Pilates Studio, Ghuznee Street in Wellington.

What made you get into Mary Kay?

Mary Kay Ash founded the company way back in 1963 & did so because she wanted to empower women. Her philosophies are what sets us apart as a company and that’s what ‘sold’ me on joining. She had taken early retirement because she was fed up with the way women were treated as second best compared to men in sales positions (we’re talking Mad Men times). Started writing down how she would run a company and then decided to do exactly that. She and her mother had used products developed by a hide tanner, for over 10 years and Mary Kay bought the formulations from his grand-daughter. Our business plan allows women to be as successful as they’re prepared to work for.

What motivates you to stay in the “industry”?

I have a team of 80 independent Beauty Consultants and I love working with, inspiring and teaching them. Mary Kay Cosmetics is committed to enriching the lives of women, we still make our own products, remain a family owned business and are continually improving our product range. The company offer a 90 day, 100% satisfaction guarantee – Mary Kay Ash couldn’t stand the way women would take a product home, realize it didn’t suit, yet couldn’t return it!! I love being my own boss, love the flexibility of being self-employed, love the rewards and sister hood. We have a very special ‘deal’ at the moment – you can join Mary Kay for ONLY $99 instead of $229. Available until the end of August.
