Quick Tip: Dilute with Aloe Vera

July 7th, 2010

If you have a moisturiser that’s a bit too rich for you, try mixing it with a little bit of Aloe vera in the palm of your hand before applying.

I use the cheap Fruit of the Earth brand Aloe vera as a hair gel and it also works nicely when mixed with moisturiser, so you don’t need anything fancy.

The only issue I’ve come across is that Aloe vera won’t mix well with something ultra thick like Nivea Creme. It tends to go a bit curdly. But it still applies nicely and helps give a soft, non-greasy finish.

The jean genie

June 6th, 2009

If you had three jean-genie wishes what would they be? Probably something like:

  1. I wish my legs looked slimmer/filled-out;
  2. I wish my bum looked buxom/smaller;
  3. I wish my jeans accentuated my curves

These are all really wishes for obtaining the right proportions, aesthetically speaking. Well, Jean Genie says the magic is all in the cut and colour of your jeans.

First tip: Control the appearance of your thighs by choosing either a flat colour (for enlarging spindly legs) or a two toned wash (for slimming). Look at my diagram. Both rectangles are the same dimensions. But the two tone looks slimmer even with the lighter colour.

Second tip: Make your butt look bigger with small pockets, and smaller with big pockets. easy.

Third tip: They’re not always in fashion, but get bootcuts or flares to balance and accentuate curves. Straight cut and skinny jeans will widen the look of hips, because in comparison the legs look way slim. That’s why boots look so good with skinny jeans because it provides the balance toyour figure that bootcuts and flares give.

Those are my tips. Gleaned from years of jean shopping. My fave place to buy jeans in Welly is Hurrican Jeans. There staff are helpful as and knowledgeable and they give student discounts.

Three post-event 2am tips you probably already know

August 31st, 2008
  1. If you go on a fabulous tropical holiday and get really badly sunburnt, apply some rich moisturiser. Do it again a couple of hours later. And again. And again. If you’re not in the act of moisturising, then you should be in the act of thinking about when you’re next going to do it. That way, you’ll avoid godawful peeling. Although picking is fun.
  2. If you’re going to be wearing a physically irritating piece of clothing – likeĀ  a non-lined sequined shrug (as opposed to a mentally irritating piece like anything Mischa Barton may wear), apply a barrier cream underneath it. That means either something sport-astic (ha, like I can name brands) or something for preventing Nappy Rash, or 3B cream, with those creepy ads with personificated boobs, thighs and butt crack. You’ll be far less irritated by your clothing, and thank me for it in the morning.
  3. Beware wax creams that go underneath eyeshadow, because they may make your eyeshadow crease. Okay, so that’s not really a very well thought-out tip, but how about I add “Beware the luxury and fantastic service of the Hawthorn Lounge” to that, and we call it a day?
